I'm looking into getting one of these babies

Apex DVD Player with Progressive Scan
Brand/Model: APX AD800

or

Apex 3 Disc DVD Changer
Brand/Model: APX AD5131

they're both 159.99 at circuit city
is the first one really that much better in terms of picture quality?
any kind of feedback would be great, thanks!

I just got the Apex AD-1500 for $89.00 from BestBuy B&M with a coupon last week.

Quality is good but the remote is a little weak. But hey for under a 100 out the door who's complaining.

Yeah, I don't know much about the Apex's either, though I've heard they are good for all around compatability... they can run cdr, mp3s, etc, etc...

I also saw one for pretty cheap though. I wasn't interested so I didn't take down the number, but it was under $100 without any coupons at Walmart B&M...

If I'm not mistaken, you need a progressive scan TV to support the progressive scan DVD players. Nonetheless, progressive scan definately offers superior image quality over traditional output.

When they say they support CDR, etc -

Will they play .mpg or .avi files off of a CDR? Or just .mp3?

I believe the Apex plays mp3's and vcd on cdr's.

It is my understanding that they will play mpg (MPEG1), .m2v/m2p (MPEG2), and .vob files

I know for sure the 3-disc version will do that, the one with progressive scan I have no idea, and would like to know

are you sure the mpeg doesn't have to be in a .dat or vcd format?

Yes, my friend has the 3-disc apex player and he can play mpeg files straight from a cd-r as long they are named .mpg. My friend said if your MPEG-2 files have extension .mpg as well, the player will play it.. which means no need to burn as vcd/svcd

Yeah, I bought the 1500 a couple weeks ago for my Dad's birthday - $81 out the door thanks to the 10% off Best Buy coupon (Thanks, Apexers!!)

I have a Sony DVD player at home, but for $80-90 it may be worth it to get another one to be able to play .mpg movies on it...

I'll have to swing by my parent's house with some downloaded movies & see if it actually works!
