OK this is the problem I am having. I am trying to connect two of my computers together so I can share large files. I have a 500 pIII, 192 mb, 8x DVD, 4x CDR, Soundblaster live, Diamond Viper V770, INtel PRo/set 10/100 NIC, 13 gig hd. (yes its an older system but it is still fast enough for some things) and I am trying to connect it to a Dell pIII 450, 13 gig, 6x dvd, 4x cdr, 64mb, 8mb agp vid, which has been working on a different network for a couple of years.

The problem obviously lies in the first system, but for whatever reason I can not get the two computers to recognize each other. THe problem is I need to get this operational by tomorrow as I have to ship the one computer up to Santa Cruz this weekend, yet I need to reformat the HD on the 500 mhz system. (There is a problem with the CDRW which I have to "trouble shoot" by reformating everything before I can get a new CDRW from the manufacturer.

SO, pertinent information: I AM using a Cross over cable, so that is not the problem. The 500 mhz system diagnostic is coming back as ok, it shows that it is receiving packets and supposedly sending some. The diagnostic also shows that there is a link, 100 mbs, full duplex, and that there is some activity The 450 mhz system diagnostic shows that it is ok, but when I have the diagnostic check the connection, it says that it is not receiving any packets, and not showing the other computer.

If someone can please help out, I would appreciate it.

Is NetBEUI installed on both machines?

If i were you i'd take the easy way out... take the hard drive out, put it in the other computer, reformat, copy, erase... do what you need to without the network fuss.

Unfortunately, I have to have the 500mhz machine capable of connecting with any of the other computers in the house. Due to the size of some of the documents and what i am trying to transfer, there is no media which is large enough to easily transport it. I have a bunch of large files on our laptops and the other 3 or 4 computers spread around the house.

ok... double check the ip addresses. one digit can mess everythign up. make sure netbeui is installed on both machines and that file and print sharing are on. Yeah i know these seem "dumb questions" but sometimes we screw up and dont notice it. BTW what OS are you running on these??

install it. Its under "protocols" in the network settings. Its needed for file sharing. I dont have any win98se machines running so i can't tell you exactly what to try.

OK I will try it, I think I actually might have already installed it previously though. I actually ahve file and print sharing enabled on both machines. Lets see if htis works,

heres the thing... if your not getting any packets through then its not a problem with the filesharing (yet). Its a problem with your network settings (IP, Domain, Workgroup).

ok I now have it that the computers are at least recognizing each other. Now I just have to get it so that the information will easily be shared. So you are telling me to check my Ip, Domain, workgroup. The domain and workgroup are exactly the same....so that would leave the IP address. Let me see what the story with that is and then I will make sure that they are matched
