Would someone mind explaining to me why you would need CAT 6 cable on your home network?

We run 100Mbs (theoretically) here at UCLA. Cat 5 will do, but hey let's get ready for the future and buy the Cat 6.

Actually, gentlemen, Cat 5E (the defacto standard for new cabling) is rated for gigabit. So Cat6 is for? Terabit cable routers?

We upgraded to cat6 when our office moved. :naughty:
I imagine that with CAT6, you'll come close to actually hitting 100-mbit. On CAT5, it's still only around 50-70Mbits actual throughput...

I wish I got even 50Mbs on our UCLA network. As of right now according to DSLextreme.com, our 100Mbs network is getting 544kbs. Suckage=UCLA NS (netweork services).

Keep in mind I'm not talking megabytes, but megabits. 10 Megabits is about 2.2Megabytes per second, I think. But even that's just theoretical. No one actually gets that b/c wires suck.

Go figure, just when I was starting to feel proud about being able to do something fast.

First you need to get your cable company to install UG66 cable to your modem to get the full benefit of cat 6.

So essentially what some of you are saying is that because you may need it in the far future, you should fall for Worst Buy's marketing. I'm sure you have 40 amp electrical in your living room also, just in case you need extra capacity or want to hook the dryer up.
Please enlighten me on the applications that you use on your home network that are bumping against the limits of gigabit ethernet.
