I've driven a '98 Galant and i like it alot, it was real peppy and it drove like a very solid car. I was however, under the impression that they were a bit more expensive thatn the others on the list (Saleen Mustang not included) but if it's in your range i'd go for it
The Focus is also a great deal for the $

strangely ive driven all of those, except the saleen. my favorites were the galant and the accord. the focus didnt really do it for me, and i couldnt stand the taurus at all. if you were to take the civic route, i would suggest the previous model, it just seemed to handle better than the new one and IMO it looked better. its still a decent car and its bigger.

I would also say either the accord or the gallant. I think that those cars will be much more reliable than the Fords in the long run.

focus is a VW Golf wanna be...
accords are overpriced and feel a bit 'cheap' at least to me...
bang for your buck...look into VWs, they're packed with options and they just feel solid. drive an accord, civic, focus and a jetta/golf on the same day...you'll understand.

I'd say get a new list, but from that.. I guess the Focus.

awww geez, here we go again....

when there's a list of American cars and Japanese cars mixed....majority says the Japanese cars are better....:(
well, if your mom's gonna use it for the baby as well...I think safety is #1 thing you should look at...fords are pretty high up there with their safety ratings..
As for the galant, my friend has a 99 galant....4 cylinder....too weak..
if you're getting that....get the 6.

'02 Accord (Maybe, but I don't like driving what 90% of the people drive so I wouldn't get it) It is a nice car though.
'02 Focus (Its a Ford, nuff said. Till they get their act together, I suggest skipping them)
'02 Taurus (see above)
'02 Civic (One word : Ugly)
'02 Mustang (see Taurus, Focus)
'02 Galant (Maybe but its a Mitsu and I haven't had much experience with them)
Suggestion, check out the Lancer if you want to go with Mitsu.
I know the Subaru WRX is ugly, but I think the engine makes up for its ugliness.
'02 Camry??? If you are looking at the Accord, why not the new Camry. Looks kinda neat, almost like a Intrepid.

I can't stand accords & camry's because styling is so annoying...they always seem to copy some other design instead of creating something nice looking and original

When do you want to make your purchase? The Accord is my pick of the bunch- However, it is due for its cyclical re-design very soon. I have rented the FOCUS on numerous occasions and it drove fine, except I felt unsafe while driving on the freeway- didn't feel very stable/responsive, especially when quick lane changes were necessary.

I am not impressed by american cars. My g-ma always gets them and they never last more than 3 years. I would choose Honda, only a CR-V which isn't on the list. My mom is going to get one soon I think.
Although Volkswagen and Audi are my favs but those weren't included in the list at all :(

yeah I kinda agree...accords and camry's tend to rippoff other people's designs.
I wouldn't get an intrepid because I don't trust Chrysler with passenger cars. I think they build better trucks personally. Although, I once rented a dodge neon and it was so much fun to drive. Heehee.

I would go Accord or Camry. They're good, dependable cars with good gas mileage. I mean seriously, no one with a kid is buying a car for its styling or power, although the accord and camry look OK i think. You just want something that will work well for a long time.

Of course, there's always the F-650 SuperCrewzer. You can fit the Kids and everything you own in this truck. And it's got the power and stylin (to me at least). Moderate pricing too!

I'd like to put in my vote for the accord. But, make sure you get the V6.
I see no point in getting a F**king Old Rebuilt Dodge
The Civic is the Accord's B**ch anyways
The Galant is probably the safest Mitsubishi, but it's still a Mitsubishi, so I wouldn't want my kid in one of those deathtraps (not a bad sound system though). Too fast... too light. Designed like bad planes (takes off OK, not good at landing).

I was looking at passenger carsawhileago and found that the Nissan Maxima was a blast to drive and the best value. If you cant swing that one try the Altima. THey are really great cars but not as popular as the Hondas. You should at least test drive one. Anyway Accord otherwise.

I've driven a neon, and it was fun. but I would never go out and buy a neon. I would buy a dodge ram because that's one mean truck. I'd buy a dodge viper because its an exotic that's probably just going to sit in my garage 90% of the time. I wouldn't buy a sebring, pt cruiser or 300m. Just because I don't hate Chrysler, doesn't mean I like all Chrysler cars.
I do love the S-class mercedes but I still think the M-class looks like a minivan with big tires. :D

The Honda Accord is the best choice on your list. It is going to be more dependable and problem free than any of your other choices. And it has the best resale value of any other of the cars on your list. Check out what used Honda Accords sell for then check the others. The depreciation on Honda's if pretty low.

Joe, if youre not married to that list, i suggest you do take a look at volkswagens like a few others said earlier. when i was car shopping about a year ago, i visited my vw dealer. the guy let me take out a passat 1.8T, 2.6, jetta and a jetta vr6 by MYSELF! that was fun, as soon as i brought a car back, he had the next one waiting. anyway, all of them were great cars, good handling, great structural rigidity, and great fit and finish. excellent all around cars at a good price. my neighbor, who had bought a 99 mustang cobra, 6speed (i think), lost complete traction on a icy road one day and slammed right into a tree. it was completely totaled the first winter he had it, so he went out and got a brand new jetta vr6. its not as fast, but its more practical, often handles better, is better on gas and insurance and according to him, its "fast enough". spoken like a married man :shake:. everyone knows its NEVER FAST ENOUGH.

the whole car buying experience has be disillusioned beyond belief
The TV says 0 % apr, the paper does too, the radio does, everyone says 0% apr EXCEPT for the dealers, you ask them about that and you get, "no no no thats a dream" frigging metro honda wanted to get us into a civic lx for 285 a month for 39 months, 5.9$ with tradein of 7000 car and still have to pay sales tax. thats a civic, he told me and my mom getting an accord is a dream it will never happen for us. My mom doesnt have bad credit either. frikkin morons. We are leaning twords the ford focus 5 door lx, base is 12 on them and we can go for about 15 on a lease, we cant go much over 15-16 thou cause then it goes over 200 a month and me affording that is iffy with just working mcdonalds. We dont wanna go used AT ALL. new all the way we have had bad experience with used cars. any more suggestions???

Haahaa, oh really? Let me ask you something, how old do are you? The reason I ask is because that has a lot to do with it. It happened to me before. I was like 18 or something and went with my mom to buy a car. They kept saying that what I was looking for was impossible, this and that...blah blah...Now 7 years later, I go buy a car and I actually had a pretty decent experience (minus South Bay BMW which are known to be jackarses to begin with) refer to southbay BMW thread. I say get on carsdirect, remember all the crap there is to know, bring that newpaper ad and go to the dealer. When you deal with these freaks, you gotta know what you want and you gotta know how much it costs for you AND the dealer. Don't showup unprepared.

Everyone keeps bashing Ford left and right with no substantial evidence to support their opinion. Also, there is nothing but praise for the Honda Accord.
Well, here is my experience: I have had my 91 Ford Escort for well over 4 years. It has about 140,000 miles on it thus far. I have not had one single problem with my car (other than replacing the battery and brake pads, which is normal maintenence). My parents, on the other hand, have a 94 Accord which has had countless problems. It seems like everytime I speak with them, there is always something new wrong with the car. It is a relatively low mileage car compared to mine, yet still much more problematic.
The moral of the story is that you should not judge a car by its cover (or its stereotype in this case). There are many good cars out there that have been brushed off because of narrow-mindedness.
What about Hyundai? or even Saturn?

Every major car manufacturer has its successes and failures, even within the same year/model/plant of cars. So one person's "success" or "failure" is never a very good barometer of a particular car. (I also had a '91 Taurus that blew its trans at about 100,000 - it also had major problems with the AC, motor mounts, ball joints - so I junked it.)
It is always an interesting comparison to look at the Consumer Reports summary pages for used cars and see which ones have the better reliability records. If the red dots mean "good" and the black dots mean "bad", you will usually find the pages full of "red" dots associated with Japanese cars. This isn't my opinion or bias (I've never owned Japanese).
[edit: oops, forgot about the Nissan Stanza Wagon I had. Guess I did have one Japanese car (and I was pretty happy with it).]

My and my family's dealings with dealers leads me to the same conclusion of all the companies that I've dealt with...
you get varying milege with varying dealerships whether they be Ford/GM/Chrys/Mazda/Honda/Hyundai/Toyota/Nissan, etc.etc.etc.

im not sure if youre saying that hyundai is a good car or not, but im sure saturn is a good car. unfortunatly it is brushed off often simply because it is more plain vanilla than a ford taurus. it is often forgotten when considering a car because for a few thousand more you could get something with a more "exciting" image.
as for hyundai, they suck. big time. i know a person who works at a hyundai/ford dealership and hes always telling me about how everday people are bringing in their cars for warrenty work. he has seen people lose body panels by driving over bumps on the road! and another friend of mine who work at a car rental store tells me the same stories.

when did you see a honda ad for 0% apr? sometimes end of the year clearences say that, but only "for qualified buyers". any advertised interest rate has that same restriction. pesonally, ive only seen and heard of ford and gm advertising 0 apr. try one of their brands.

I don't like saturns either. my coworker owns one and we drove up to frisco in it...most uncomfortable ride of my life. That's 6 hrs to and 6 hrs back. I don't know the interior is cheap looking. Quality just wasn't there.
As for not owning a ford, well...I owned a Mazda...that's close enough. And I'll tell you this, I don't think I'd buy another one any time soon. Its not a horrible car, but it wasn't all that great either. The RX8 is rather tempting though, but I don't know...I'm scared of the Ford family of cars right now.

I'll agree with the Saturn posts in a number of respects.
-yes, the interiors look cheap, but I challenge you to find one with broken plastic pieces or non-working parts. I've come to view them as "utilitarian" as opposed to "cheap", simply because they continue to perform their function despite the abuse we heap on our cars. Find me an 8 year old Japanese or American car with a fully functioning interior and I'll show you a liar. :)
- Yes they're small, but then again, I've never ridden in their L-Series car (supposedly their midsize sedan). Their "other" model (they only have 2!) was quite small, but then again, it was priced against the Civics and Neons of the world, against which it is plenty roomy.
- Seat comfort could be better but then again, I have a balky back, and the only seats that really fit me perfectly are the carbon sport seats in the '96-'99 Carreras. :(
- I've never heard anyone complain profusely about service they've received from a Saturn dealership. I don't like the fact that there's no dicker room, but then again...well, I suppose I'm a masochist. Whenever I've gone in with a friend or something, they've been inordinately calm, pleasant and clean (none of which are a given at a car dealership).
I guess if I was in the market for a budget car, I'd probably give a Saturn a lot more consideration than it's totally and utterly un-sexy image might deserve.
Should this be in the automobile forum. You'd get a better response.
And what's the price range? Is that a 4 banger Accord you're talking about?
All I can say is stay away from mitsubishi. There's a reason why they're giving those cars away.

i havent actually driven a saturn or ridden in one in over five years, so i wouldnt know about comfort, but i was talking about the car itself. theyre more of a "get from a to b" car than a "lets go cruisin" car, but they are still reliable and functional. as far as interior room, they have just as much as an older civic or corolla. but for people who have to have a new car and dont have money for one, saturn may be the way for some to go. me, i got other plans...

I think the appropriate noise to make here is..."BLEAUGH!!!"
What the hell is that thing? It's like the last-gen S series nose stuck onto a Jag S-type doors and an old J30 or, worse, mid 80's Caddy backside! Holy hell, Batman, send it back! Send it back from whence it came!
And for DF: me bum is me bum. It be highly picky. I've sit in many a seat, but no matter what kind of gizmos they put in 'em (for instance, the new Tahoes have, like, 6 different inflatable air cushions), the best are the non-adjustable ones in the last-generation Porsches.

What the hell is it??? its a mercedes benz maybach. limited production, handbuilt to personal specifications, twin turbo v12, $300,000 ultra luxury sedan. not something to drive, but more like to be drivin in. i like it, especially when the side panels glow at night. i just have different tastes in cars from most people.
