The number sent for 9/11 support is ~$520 million. That's from the mouth of the Red Crosses PR person.

That's the way I feel, too. I wonder what United Way's "output to input" percentage is?

My sister once dated an executive for The United Way. They have increadable facilities for their executives. Two top rate spas (including sauna and hot tubs), limos, private jet, the works. THey live like kings. What exactly does the Untied Way do? I can't tell you off the top of my head.
The Red Cross uses les than 6% of it's contributions for administrative overhead. In some branches it's 4%. That's very low for a charity. What does the Red Cross do? Off the top of my head: Collects blood for hospitals and emergencies. In any didaster they are there to help. When other organizations like the National Guard, Police, or any other relief organization are still trying to organize a response, they are pulling up at the scene with food, shelter, clothing and medical support. Anytime someone is displaced from their home by a disaster (no matter how small) your house burns down? Red Cross is there. They will make sure you have a place to sleep, clothes on your back, and food in your belly. They will help you contact relatives and help relatives contact you.
And this is just off the top of my head.

I will never give The United Way a dime. I will give blood and money to the Red Cross whenever they need it. If I am ever unfortunate enough to need them, I know the Red Cross will be there.

I completly agree, screw the United Way. When they learn to allocate their money appropriatly then I will give them some money.

The Red Cross isnt an angelic organization either. All of the blood collected after 9-11 was done so for new york victims. The truth of the matter is that very few blood transfusions were performed and there was never any shortage. They exploited the event to gain money and blood from our citizens. Althought the money is going to a good cause: relatives of victims

Ok they never said there is too many people who will need blood transfusuions what they did say is that, all the people hurt will most likely require blood tranfusions... and because the estimate was 6000 hurt/deal/missing people at the time, they needed as much blood as possible, especially 0 negative...
They were just preparing for the worst
