View Full Version : Using the wrong word, Part II

OC
10-26-2001, 10:38 PM
For many of you, it's a pet peeve when people use the wrong word, like "your" instead of "you're", or "there" instead of "their", or whatever. It's certainly a pet peeve of mine.

For the perpetrators of this heinous act, you don't care and seem to take offense when it is pointed out to you. It is to you that I wish to speak -

Typos are one thing. Slang, jargon, industry-speak - all perfectly acceptable. Intentionally using the wrong gd word is another matter. When you do that, I am more distracted by your lack of brains than I am impressed by whatever point you're trying to make. And believe me, one day it will bite you in the ass. Eventually it'll crop up on a resume, or a term paper, or some other important document. You think it's harsh in chat rooms and online forums? Wait til you get a dose of real life.

It is one thing to learn from your own mistakes - it shows wisdom to learn from the mistakes of others.

No bashing, no judgement - use the right word and do your best to appear intelligent or face the consequences later.

what do you mean no bashing no judgement? ehh? You post a thread, it automaticaly(sp?) puts up your opinion for ridicule and contradiction :P

ok, get this. I dont care if i get my their's and there's mixed up on the damn forums. Why? Simple. It aint no legal document, nor a school paper. If it were, i would stop and think and spell it the right way. I know how, but i'm a bit lazy i guess and dont want to bother doing it. I'm not in school right now, and it just makes my brain hurt to stop and think that long. So, stop being so anal-retentive and lax out a bit d00d... if the world were perfect, then it would be booring as hell :)

Just to re-state it for the non-readers - "When you do that, I am more distracted by your lack of brains than I am impressed by whatever point you're trying to make."

Believe me, there are more of us than there are of you. If you don't care in this non-relevant forum, hiring managers won't care either - about you. Can you understand that?

This is important, and it matters - you need to get past your arrogant young minds and realize that there indeed ARE people that KNOW MORE THAN YOU DO.

YOU NEED TO GET THE SMALL STUFF RIGHT BEFORE YOU CAN EVER HOPE OF GETTING THE BIG STUFF RIGHT!

Stop complaining that we elders are being anal - pay attention and learn something for God's sake.

A. I read it.
B. I read ALL of it.
C. I'm not applying for a job on G|A? Anytime soon, or with any of the others poster's places of employment.
D. What's this have to so with small stuff / big stuff?
E. Like Duh, of course people know more than i do.
F. I ALREADY know what your talking about, i just dont give a **** about it, HERE ON THE FORUMS.
G. READ THE SMALL STUFF - i said i would care if it were on a school paper or on a legal document. That encompases job applications etc.
H. Go pull your head out. Try not to be so "I'm so offended by a few grammar errors i'm gonna get Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo distracted that my little brain is gonna totally loose track of the point of the post cause it gets sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooo upset by it.

Geez. Thats what posting is all about. Making mistakes and not caring :)

BTW, I know i'm being pretty cocky up there. So i must say i'm not meaning to offend (although i'm sure by now you are quite ruffled under the feathres). I'm just "smartin off" at a faceless name. I've got nothing against you, even though i did smart off realy nicely up there :heh:

C. I'm not applying for a job on G|A? Anytime soon, or with any of the others poster's places of employment. Who said anything about working for GA? I merely mentioned hiring managers. This says to me that you don't understand what I'm trying to say.
D. What's this have to so with small stuff / big stuff? Like I said - YOU NEED TO GET THE SMALL STUFF RIGHT BEFORE YOU CAN EVER HOPE OF GETTING THE BIG STUFF RIGHT!
E. Like Duh, of course people know more than i do. Well, good.
F. I ALREADY know what your talking about, i just dont give a **** about it, HERE ON THE FORUMS. This is EXACTLY my point - people like you either don't care or take offense at having your errors pointed out.
G. READ THE SMALL STUFF - i said i would care if it were on a school paper or on a legal document. That encompases job applications etc. again - YOU NEED TO GET THE SMALL STUFF RIGHT BEFORE YOU CAN EVER HOPE OF GETTING THE BIG STUFF RIGHT!

Geez. Thats what posting is all about. Making mistakes and not caring :) Says you. Again - there are more of us than there are of you. If you want to keep looking like an idiot, go right ahead.

BTW, I know i'm being pretty cocky up there. That's just your age showing. If you don't care - fine. I obviously won't be able to change your mind. You - and others like you - just need to know that there are LOTS of people like me that put just as much weight into your presentaion as they do your words. This kind of attitude WILL bite you in the ass one day, imho.

It's nice to have you back OC. I agree with you. The "intentional typos"-if there is such a thing- are really annoying for me to. Not so much that it distracts me from reading, it just makes people look stupid. I'm guilty of it too sometimes, but I do my best. If people want to look stupid, I guess that's their (not "there") choice.

heres the deal... when i come here, i come to chill, relax, hang out, be politically incorrect, voice opinions that i cant elsewhere, and to use my "i dont care" attitude, cuase all day long, i CAN NOT do any of the above at work. Its my "escape", and if i have to worry about being gramatically correct when i'm "escaping", then what good is it to escape?

btw, just how old do you think i am? 14, 16, 18, OMG, 20?

i already got the small stuff right. I get it right every day. every night i come here and "not get it right".

and i dont get the "theres more of us than you" thing... is that more people over 60, more people that just cant read something if its not perfect, more people that care (about what?), more people that like to correct others....? Is this a battle or something?

personally i think my posting on this forums isn't something important enough in life to care about much. Like i said, its just my little place to escape. If a person doesn't have a place to escape and "not care", then they will eventually go crazy. And that (yeah, dont start a sentenance with "AND") gomes with a 200 year money back garuntee(sp?).

If you really want to go bug someone, go but the GAM. the GAM makes waaaaay to many grammar errors. really.

Here, my case-in-point:

The bodily functions thread was the last thing gotmilk done to earn a timeout. Other things, like not keeping sig picture 20kb even when requested did not help matters.

ick.

I'm guilty of it too sometimes, but I do my best. If people want to look stupid, I guess that's their (not "there") choice. Exactly my point. Having an informed opinion requires having a certain level of intelligence. If they don't display that intelligence by using the right word - again accounting for slang and jargon - what reason do I have to take their opinion seriously? None. And for those that continually make these same "mistakes" over and over again, then state that they don't care about them? Even less.

I grew up learning two languages, at virtually the same time. It has provided for some confusion in the past, and although i know two languages well, i'm not as strong in one (english) as i would have been learning it by itself. And (:heh: ) yes, oddly enuf, english is my primary language.

a couple of thoughts here:

i usually don't care if someone uses the right or wrong word. words don't mean anything...people do. i care more about the message. i will take that person less seriously in content if they cannot spell or habitually cannot use the correct words. but if i look into the content, i should be able to strike a balance and get a good message out of their oration. if that content pisses me off, then of course i will have to say that it will have more impact on how i feel about the proper usage of words than if it otherwise pleases me.

sometimes a person will use all capital letters to make a point, which is perceived as yelling when i read it. i'm thinking, "ouch...my ears..." but again, who really cares. if i dont think that person is talking to me, then i'm better about it than if it were directed at me. if that person is yelling at me, then i will automatically defend myself and much of the purpose would be lost. if someone has a problem with me, then it may be more productive to approach me in a polite manner, with reasoning that i can understand. if the person is polite and stuff, i may reconsider my actions just on those grounds, regardless of whether or not i agree.

it is true that your habits may show in other facets of life, so it may have an impact on your "serious life." it is also true that peeps come here to relax and stuff, and "get away from it all." so i won't comment on what is more valid, because there are just too many variables to consider in order to come up with a blanket statement.

Who really cares? It's a Message board. No one grades the spelling. So long as the point is communicated. If the person thping the incorect grammar or word is misunderstood, it their problem. Their error costs them, as they will not be heard. Oh, well, too bad. Who cares?

For the most part, I overlook things. As long as I can read the message, thats fine. Sometimes things are way to annoying so that I don't even want to read whats posted by that person. But then they get picked on by the "elders" and stop and even apologize.

Some people get ticked off at grammar. My ex-best friend was an english major and she used to get wicked pissed off at me because I used to make up words (mostly to annoy her) and I never used grammar correctly. I often type here as I would speak to friends, which isn't necessarily how I would speak/write in a professional setting. If someone here thinks I'm stupid for that, thats fine with me. I know the truth. :) Its like a different world here. Some people get ticked with the little things, others don't. To each his own.

When I see the way some of the people in this forum spell, I think..."This is America?....This is what they're NOT learning in school?". Good Grief, I learned how to spell by the time I entered Junior High.
I have a friend who is studying at TEMPLE to become a writer for the media. This guy is 35 and I can't believe how badly he spells.
Now I understand why English courses are offered in college...GASP!!

The truly intelligent realizes tis the listening that matters, not the speaking.

If one cannot get past the surface, true, one cannot work from a common ground. But if the message is there, the attempt should be made to understand first, correct later. I mean, I've gone after people for being completely incomprehensible - I can't argue with someone I don't know what the hell came out of there mouth. But otherwise, it isn't my place to play teacher, unasked. Not when at the time, my job should be listening.

What grammar cops and slang police fail to realize is that what they are really against is change. The English language is the most mallable of clays; shaping and reshaping all the time. And the rules change, based on the region - what is proper in New York would get y'all laughed at in Texas, and back again. What is proper now, wasn't 100 years ago, 200 years ago, and if we spoke with a person of Chaucer's time, we would be speaking a different language. It is the nature of it to bend; because it cannot break.

But those so insistant to correct and steer the language are actually harming it, pulling it back from it's normal course of Evolution. But...they cannot stop it.

actually the problem with english college courses is that they dont teach grammar and spelling. granted, you have to use both correctly in your papers to get a good grade, but they do not "teach" the stuff to you. it's expected that you already know it. this is really a big mistake. so many people haven't learned the stuff in high school or just need a refresher. i know people who have masters in english and still don't know grammar as well as i do. i think this is a big mistake.

Sir_Froggy, I have a question...

Concentration (Concentrasion), I can understand misspelling. Rote (Wrote) even. But laugh? Was that an honest misspelling or just typing and spelling it that way on purpose? I notice that you spell certain words correctly, which to me are harder words to spell, but others are misspelled (not that laugh is easy. ;) ). I'm just curious. Are all your posts spelled wrong on purpose or do you really not know how to spell?
