So I've been taking arabic this quarter and our prof gave us a little bit off insight yesterday in class about the arabic language. He said that he wagers that Osama bin Laden didn't know much about the history of the arabic language or the use of its terms here's why:

al Queda- in arabic literally means "the base" as we've all heard on the news. but the context for using this word in arabic is only for those who DON'T go to war. Like talking about support units or troops who stay at home. They are not the people that go out and fight the war. His terrorist group is misnamed. Fuking idiot. Nice holy war you stupid fuk. (sorry, personal feelings getting in there)

taliban- in arabic literally means "students" or "those who study/learn" (from the singular word for student, "talib"). it's similar to the word in Persian. These guys started as religious students who went astray, yet they keep the same name. If they really lived by their names, they would learn from people, not impose ridiculous harsh rule. I hate stupid people. They are making arabs (like myself) and middle eastern people/languaes/cultures look ridiculous. Jackasses.

I wish more Arabic (and Muslim) people would say that more often about Osama Bin Laden and Taliban. In reality even those who say it, sometimes don't mean it (not about you Brew).

personally, i just wish more people in general would think it. it doesn't matter who they are or where they come from.

and as far as the part where you say, "In reality even those who say it, sometimes don't mean it"....talk about your safe statements! in reality, sometimes people go to church but don't mean it, too. sometimes they say "sorry" but don't mean it. sometimes they say "i love you" but don't mean it. this is not a trait that is characteristic of muslims or arabs. by that token, it's not fair to take a person that says they condemn obl and disbelieve them on the grounds that "they don't mean it" without good reason to make such a claim.
