View Full Version : Trouble installing video card

So I just got a Visiontek GeForce 2 GTS. I read through the installation procedure and did everything I was told and am still having problems. I suspect a couple things, but am still not sure exactly what the problem is.

For one, my old video card is integrated on my motherboard, so I know I have to disable that to make the new one work. I read this can be done in my BIOS or with jumpers on the motherboard. I can't find anywhere in my BIOS where the old one can be disabled, so I did it with the jumpers and still recognizes the old one.

Also, I have gotten the computer to recognize the new card, but when I try to change the display settings, not only does it not even let me go past a pathetic 16-bit color scheme, but when I restart to put the new settings into effect, it gets stuck and I have to power off and then usually start back up in safe mode.

I know I have the newest drivers because I went to the Visiontek website and found them. One thing I suspect after reading the manual is that I may have to re-assign the IRQ for the card. It said the card cannot share an IRQ with any other device, and when I finally had it installed, it was sharing #10 with my Ethernet adapter. But I do not know how to re-assign IRQs.

So basically I don't know if the problem is with my motherboard jumpers, my BIOS, or who knows what other settings. Anyone have an idea or may have gone through this as well?

It might help us if you mention what motherboard and BIOS you were using.

First of all, there should be a way for you to disable the onboard video. If you've already tried with the jumpers and it didn't work, perhaps you should look back in the BIOS. It should be in a section called "Integrated Peripherals" under a setting for "Onboard Video". I could be wrong here since I don't know what motherboard/BIOS you're using.

If you still can't figure out how to disable the onboard video, you might just have to live with having two video cards in your system which is still doable. Since you mentioned IRQs in your post, I gather this is a PCI video card? If so, I believe you'll have to move the Geforce to PCI slot #1 and hopefully it should see the Geforce as the primary card.

In regards to the IRQ conflict, what other PCI cards do you have? You could either manually assign IRQs to each PCI slot (once again, depending on the BIOS) or try shuffling cards around to get the right combination. There might also be one other setting in the BIOS called "PNP OS". If enabled, it let's Windows control the allocation of the IRQs. If disabled, the motherboard will determine the IRQs for the PCI cards, either automatically or through your manual assignments.

I'm sorry if these suggestions seem vague or if you've already tried them. Hopefully, once you post further details about your motherboard/BIOS, someone with the same hardware might be able to help. Good luck. :)
