View Full Version : Off Road requirement for trucks & SUVs?

This is an off shoot from the truck thread....
I think people with trucks and SUVs should be required to take them off road at least twice a year or at least visit a national park or something to merit owning their vehicle. I love trucks but I can't afford one and it pisses me of to see fuking soccer moms driving F-150's and Yukons and sh1t just to get groceries. If you don't use it for it's intended purpose, don't pollute my environment. I mean, who needs a V8 or V10 to drive around town. Sheesh. If I had a truck, I would be a back country hermit driving anywhere EXCEPT on roads.
For this reason my mom should have her Ford Explorer impounded. She doesn't need a good off road vehicle. She should be mandated to drive my sister's Civic. And don't even get me started on Mercedes(except the old skool war one) and BMW SUVs....

weak. trucks are made to be thrashed and fixed again. SUVs have no excuse. take em off road or leave your keys at the door and pick up your new Civic out back.

Well, I have an SUV, and I find it to be far more useful than, say, a Pickup for putting big stuff in.
That would be like mandating people with sports cars MUST drive fast all the time. Given the horrendous drivers that sometimes pilot hot cars, I don't think you'd really want one.
Another case of poor people trying to legislate behavior! You go to hell, young man! You go to hell and you die! :P

Seems to me more like it would be like mandating people with sports cars take them to the track to the strip at least twice a year or at least visit a track or something to merit owning their vehicle.
The logical extension for sports cars doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

The "I destroy the environment because I can afford it" argument doesn't work. Face it, you drive the big vehicals as an ego thing. To try to prove that you are better than everyone else. All you are really doing is showing us that you don't have the self respect that you should have and are compensating with a big vehical. I bought a new car a few months ago. I could have had a bug SUV or truck. Something in the 35K range would be fine. But I decided on a sedan. It was all I needed. It fit my purposes. I have nothing to prove to everyone that I don't meet.
I don't need to waste gas to boost my ego.

And, at least in SD, they seemingly always can't drive correctly either because they're either on their cell phone or they're just total punks.
And anyways, If they buy a truck/suv and don't take it offroad (read, if you buy a 4x2 or if you buy a 4x4 and don't use that part), then I have no respect them because I think those people are compensating for more than just their egos.
Compensating for all the kids and crap they have to drive around. :shifty:

I have an SUV. I like it. Next time you car people whack your front air dam on the storm gutters, you can curse my name.
I have no kids. I do, however, happen to have big loads of crap to haul sometimes. Better yet, I can transport 4 people in far more comfort anything this side of a Vanden Plaas. So :P to all of you green-eyed little toads that WISH they could get a truck. :)

Totally agree with you there.
I hate it when I see trucks where if you put ANYTHING in the bed, the truck would scrape the ground if you drive it. That is NOT a truck. Talk about misusage.

I don't like lowered trucks either. I LOVE them!! As a matter of fact, I am building one right now: an 83 Chevy Stepside. I just hope I can get it on the road by winter.
And to all the SUV owners:let them pay the prices to keep them fueled and insured in addition to their high monthly payments. They are keeping oil companies , insurance companies, banks and dealers rich.

Who are, in turn, buying more SUV's. They're keeping America rolling! :)
Hey, I am an SUV drivin' soccer mom (to be)....want me to run you over in your little civic next time I'm talkin' on my cell phone while driving? I don't know where you live, but here in Utah we have potholes bigger than your car. It's nice knowing that I can get out of the driveway in the winter time too. :P

Nanotech9, those are sweeeeet trucks. thanks for the eye candy.
as for the sports car requirement that's come up, hell yeah you should have to take it to the track. I'm not insinuating that people here don't know how to drive, but i know some fukers who own M3's and M5's and my dad with his CLK430 who can;t drive fast for sh1t. Too worried about the car, tickets, insurance, etc. Why waste the fukin money on balls-out sports cars if you're not gonna use it?
I have an '89 Volvo 740 station wagon, so I can haul anything I want DF. (no smack talkin' I'm just sayin'.) But who gives a sh1t if someone with an M3 can beat me by 4 seconds going down the curves of Sunset Blvd? My Volvo gets me there. My Volvo even does 110mph. I;ve only done it once, but that's all I need. Who cares if someone's M3 can go 160 or whatever it is. Can't use it except at the track...so go to the track or buy a Civic.

What's wrong w/ Mercedes and BMW SUVs?
We just purchased a 2001 ML320 and it rocks! We also have a 2000 BMW X5 4.4 and it's one mean machine (Although this one does guzzle gas. The Mercedes is pretty good about it.)
BrewMaster

Of hte few people I know who own ML's or X5's, none of them will take them off road. It's a waste of money to me. Just buy a Mercedes or BMW car instead. I know they clam to be good off road vehicles in their comercials, but I think its BS. No one pays the ridiculous amount for thse SUVs to go ff raod. They're a waste. Buy a Volvo. They're safer, cheaper, less gas, and more practical.
why?
Why should someone limit themselves to a car they don't want?
What if they don't like cars? What if they don't like off-roading?
There is no point in buying a car they don't like. The person likes SUV's let them drive their SUV. They paid for it, they have to live with it, etc. etc.

i have a 3 series, and while i wont take it to 150 on the street, i have been know to pass the century mark on the highway. and even at normal street speeds, my stock bimmer will out handle, accelerate, and just plain perform better than any stock civic and most modded ones too. its also much safer. the civic is still a great car and its not meant to compete with any bmw. all the technology, speed and power is very much useful on the street and i cant wait till i get an m3.
and for your little comment on MB and BMW trucks, those are both extremely capable trucks. the mercedes is more offroad capable than many trucks in its class and the bmw is an impressive high performance utility vehicle. it is not meant to be an offroad truck.
and that ridiculous price that people pay for those luxury cars isnt just going to waste. bmw, mercedes, cadillac and other luxury car companies are the reason we have such great features in cars such as fuel injection, antilock brakes, and other safety and luxury features found in even the most mundane of cars. bmw is even extensively testing a hydrogen powered, near zero emmision car (the exhaust is water) with performance compareable to its gasoline powered cars. this technology has the potentential to significantly reduce world pollution levels and is here because people who can afford it buy these cars. not so ridiculous anymore is it?

All of this is completely ignoring the fact that most of the SUVs you can buy today just aren't MADE to go off-road.
Independant front suspension is great on the road, but gives you poor travel and articulation off-road. Most SUVs come with pavement tires. Most have mediocre at best ground clearance. Without investing some serious cash in them, you'll get hung up in the first ditch you cross.
I've got a '96 S10 Blazer LS. Not a bad pavement SUV. Good for towing my boat. The 4x4 is the only thing that gets me home some days in the winter. (I live up a steep hill that gets very slick) But I wouldn't take that thing off-road if you paid me.
Heck, the little Geo Tracker I used to have was a far better off-road vehicle than the Blazer.
People who seriously go off-roading tend to buy older vehicles (or Jeeps)and build them up to do the job. SUVs are just tall station wagons these days. Their off-road skills died when the previous generation full size Blazers and Broncos disappeared.

You can blame the lack of "off-roadability" of the current crop of SUVs on the automakers - they're all trying to make them more "car like", which to me is kinda like trying to come up with a new blend of coffee that'll taste like water. If you sheep want a "car like" ride, buy a damn car for gawd sake.
Now sure, some people actually have a legit reason for wanting/needing a truck or SUV, and as I have stated many times in this forum I have no problem with that at all. But to the posers that just want a big vehicle to make themselves feel/look good - y'all are short-sighted idiots.
