View Full Version : Cursed, fu**ing, XP!!!! Help out?
Well friends, I went out and bought XP Home Edition Upgrade. And from the get go I don't like it. WHen it made a report of possible system problems I might face, there was a laundry list of conflicts. I think it said somethign to the effect that it could hurt my system now, or in the future. That's nice. = )
My main problem is the fact that i have no sound now. I have a soundblaster live card. It shows no signs of a conflict, and yet no sound. I checked, rechecked the wires, uninstalled, reinstalled, checked tech support, and even unplugged the card then back in. I checked the volume setting, the certification that XP thinks is important, ect ect. i spent 2 hours goign over everything again and again. I just want to play my game I'm jonesing for!! (Stronghold-btw)
Any advice? Any suggestions?
Eek... You bought the Home version? Can you get the Pro version? Anyhow, have you tried switching PCI slots yet?
If you even looked at this, I thnak you. The problem is resolved. I found a little button that said something like, " click for only one digital output device" I clicked it an BAM, sound emerged.
Anyway I uninstalled that atrocious OS and am taking it back to staples.
Sorry to continue this thread, but I wondered if anyone has an opinion on what I should do now. Staples won't take this OS back. They site their software policy.
My problem is it's junk. Didn't work with my system at all....where can I turn to besides, eBay.?
Thanks as always!

if you do ebay it as a used item, won't people think that it's been activated and thus not letting it install in other systems? Or did you even activate it yet? I'm guessing not. I dunno what you would do man, personally I think XP is a real nice OS. good luck.
When XP gets installed it check the compatibilty of the system. And as you stated - "When it made a report of possible system problems I might face, there was a laundry list of conflicts." This is the problem right here. You obviously have some incompatible hardware.
The SBLive drivers have been released. I suggest that you remove the sound card, install XP, download the drivers, reinstall the card, then install the drivers.
For years M$ OSes have had built-in support for older hardware, and this has lead to Windows turning into bloatware. By requiring "certified" hardware drivers for XP, M$ has put more responsibilty onto the hardware vendors, as well as the people that maintain their own computers. This is just as it should be, imho.
Just because your box can't properly run XP is no reason to call it junk. Sounds like it's time for some upgrades!

You're totally right. I heard nothing but good things about it, beforeI bought it. I'll call it junk for me and my system.
I worked my way around mostof the incompatablity issues. But still it runs everythign too slowly on here. So I just want rid of it at this point. I'm kinda fed up with staples, they should take it back. Software or not.
