A young boy, 5th or 6th grade, was going hunting with his dad this weekend. The father loaded a gun and then in the process or putting it up or whatever, the gun was dropped, went off, and shot and killed the little boy. :( Very sad thing. :(

My goodness, that is so sad, when I hear about things that happen like that it makes me want to cry so much. :(

thats what a safety is for. Are they charging the dad with anything? They should.

That is sad.

On halloween when I was in ... 9th grade, my cousin's best friend played russian roulette. He was in 7th grade and found his dad's pistol... he did it infront of two friends. They had lived next door since forever. I know a totally different thing, but still a loss for the family.

Charges shouldn't be charged. It is an accident. The father is going to live with guilt the rest of his life.

Exactly. I don't think any charges are going to be filed. Apparently (we think) he had just loaded the gun and was getting ready to put the safety on and load it into the truck when he dropped it and it went off. The family is an avil hunting family, have been hunting for years, know gun safety, etc.

You guys who went off like that are just being bastards. Gawd! Geez...

yeah, it's like saying the guy whose dog mauls his son ougth to be put in jail... yeah, sure it's irresponsible, but some things are dangerous. we can't go around punishing ppl who want to take their kids skydiving. or who allow them to skateboard. it sucks, and maybe he was being irresponsible, but it was not blatant enough that he should be punished.

also: a dead kid is infinitely more punishing than jail time. the possibility that hunting will end up with your kid dead is an infinitely greater deterrent to irresponsible gun handling than the threat of jail time. hence, jail time adds nothing to the situation, other than to punish this guy's wife and other kids.

I agree, he should not be punished. As we have seen on these forums, a dead child is punishment enough.

Exactly. Having not only a dead child but the extreme guilt for life is plenty of punishing.

Apparently the word that was going around was wrong. Here's what happened.

The boy was over at a friend's house. (Two little boys live there, so there were 3 total.) The father of those 2 boys, the owner of the house they were at, is a sheriff's deputy (K9 officer). Anyway, the boy was over there and they had all been out target shooting with rifles out back. The parents had to go to a parent teacher conference, so they brought the boys inside when they left. The father unloaded the gun before they left. It was on the bed in the bedroom. The little boy was in the living room watching tv on the couch and one of the sons went into the bedroom and was moving the gun to put it in the closet or something and it went off. There was a direct line of site from there to the couch where the little boy was sitting and he was shot in the head and killed. The boys are all 6th graders.

eesh, so he thought he unloaded the gun but actually dint, or the kid loaded it back up. that sucks. tried to be careful, but not hard enough. ouch, ouch, ouch. makes my problems pale in comparison.

I grew up in a small mid-west town and that is very common -- haybales and targets for bow and shot-gun. Wow...

Yeah, the story is different, but still the same ending. Not a father's guilt, but a young friends... That's almost as bad, if not just as.

In most places they wouldn't care about that though, people will think he was old enough to know what he was doing. A little less then two years ago in my town there was a car accident and 4 people died, the driver got 8 years in prison. This guy is bascially ostrasized (sp?) from the town for something that wasn't his fault. :bawl:

It was an accident, pure and simple, which is why people won't blame the boy. What was the guy in the car accident charged with? Because in something like that, usually it is because the driver wasn't going the correct speed for the weather or whatever. Now, if a deer or cow or something wondered into the road or whatever, that would have been an accident. But... Make sense?

(And all, you know how stories get told by word of mouth and get changed? lol That's how this one was. :( Now, it's in the papers and the school guidance counselor was in the church office where my mother-in-law works and our pastor was with the families all day. :(
