I just got my cable modem installed today - HOORAY!

Does everyone here use a cable modem? It's faster than at work. This thing rules! How did I ever live without it?

I couldnt get DSL in my area though...but I dont know, is it faster?

In my experience, cable has a faster download rate... but, it's usually got a capped upload. Where as DSL, its got basically what you pay for, but I've never seen DSL get close to cable download rates. Upload rates though, it smokes cable. So, it's kinda pick what means the most to you... Also, it seems as if DSL is a little more costly per month than cable, at least around here.

here, the dsl is way faster than cable, but i think that's an anomaly.

actually its more common than you think. In a lot of places (especially dense streets) the cable is so overloaded that the rates suck. Personally, I'm kinda happy with my download but i wish my upload was like 3 times faster (768/129 DSL). The reason I went with dsl is cause the cable here sucks and my cable has NO restrictions... so i can run all the servers i want :) which is were my issue with the upload comes in.

I've had my cable for about 2 years now and have never had any serious problems with it. Bandwith is great but has slowed just a tad now that there are quite a few more peps with it in the neighborhood with it also. I remeber the first thing i did with it was d/l some windows updates. I nearly pooped my pants when i d/l 15 megs in about a minute.:D

Yeah, cable is the best thing until the next best thing comes along. So, when is fiber optic to the home coming? :D

dsl here is faster than cable too, i never get less than 150+ K/sec d/l, usually 200+. now upload is a different story, but one thing at a time, 50k/sec just aint cutting it =P

DSL - theoretically is better....
if this was a perfect world, and everybody had high bandwidth internet cable/dsl and up, then, dsl would be the wiser choice..
but depending on your area....you gotta figure out what's better...

cable is usually faster - if you're the only one with cable modem in your area, but gotta figure that your neighbors are gonna get that junks sometime soon, so dsl i think is planning ahead...

for me, in the city - dsl is my only option (unless i do satalite, but nahhhh)

i was interested in Sprint's ION service and Broadband direct service...they looked like really good ideas and if they were faster than alternatives, i would've considered them, but they scrapped them :(.

Cable is ok here in SD but I used to have DSL up in Carlsbad and it was incredible. That pipe was so big I could drive my car through it...

Actually, in my area, cable uploads work dsl's, but dsl downloads are much faster

well, with DSL, theres really no sharing - its dedicated to each user, so you get the actual bandwidth specified for you (unless its been changed...).
Which also means that your download speed (which is probably what most of us use 98% of the time) is capped at your DSL rate (often in the 750K or lower range), but with cable, it can be WOOHOO fast. I once got a 40MB file in less than 10 seconds. I typically see downloads at the high end of DSL (1.5M) on my cable.

Man.. I have no problem with my cable. It's fast all of the time. Hopefully that won't change, but it has been that way since I got it which has been over a year.

It is capped, but maybe that is better in a way. If uncapped, some people can take all the bandwidth.

I get 245KB/45KB for Download/Upload which is much better than most DSL I have seen of 1.5/128 which is 188KB/16KB.

Yeah, if you are paying for a second phone line, it runs about the same as the price of broadband. there are several deals running around. Check with your cable/phone company and see what they are offering and what suits your needs -- then figure out the pitch to mom and dad -- faster dl times for school work research, frees up the regular phone line for important calls, etc...

We only have DSL available on base. :( But we are happy paying out the wazzu for the connection (almost $100 a month!!! 1.5/3xx) Donnie was on a dial up in Korea last year and had some major withdraws! We could never go back to dial up!

yes i do hav a second phone line, but we also use it for faxing when we need it, and recently we have. the priceing might work, but they hav the reason NOT to get is "you will just be on the computer more and you wont do your chores" besides priceing, any other ideas?

In MY experience, it's all about download speed. I have never had a peoblem with my upload speed ehtier. I use a cable modem. It kicks ass. Had 5 people playing online games this weekend. It handled it all simutaniously, just fine. The only bottleneck I have durring heavy traffic times is the internet speed itself.

Over the weekend I downloaded (cable access) a series of files that totalled about 450 MB. It took me 30 minutes, which calculates out to 2Mb/sec average download speed (and I was doing other stuff online at the time). Gotta love it!

Well, at least for me "mortgage, property tax, and home owners insurance" are all lumped together on one payment, which lessens the pain a little.

In my area (AT&T Broadband) if you have cable TV they charge $10/mo less for your cable internet ($40 as compared to $50).
