region free DVD drive?

Ok, I'm looking for a region free DVD drive for a friend of mine. I've heard of some taht you can buy region-locked and unlock them via a BIOS update. True? Not true? Any decent region free drievs out there?

ive never heard of a region encoded dvd drive, just software. as far as i know, dvd drives can read any region discs

Actually, the newer DVD-ROM drives only allow you to change the region up to 5 times.

There is a website somewhere (I forget the link) that does have modified firmware updates for popular drives which bypass the region lock though. Of course, considering these updates aren't supplied by the manufacturer, I don't know how well they'd work.
