<warning> This is a job rant. </warning>

Some of you might remember my pop-up menu dilemma from a few weeks ago. I am in no way, shape or form a javascript expert, so I used Macromedia's Fireworks to create those menus. The code that FW generates is great because it's cross-browser compliant, avoiding a LOT of headaches!

So here's the thing: I'm a web publisher who works for various departments on a recharge basis. I'm also in charge of our own department's web site redesign. In other words, I'm a small cheese.

We have a webmaster taking care of things at the parent domain level, and he's had varying degrees of failure with js-based pop-up menus, which he'd grab from free js sites. He ended up commenting out the js in Netscape because it would crash with a vengeance.

Fast forward to present day (five months later), and I receive an email asking to check out the implementation of the NEW js-based pop-up menus. You can probably guess where this is going ... they were created in Fireworks, just like I'd done a month ago!

I'm not here to rant about "He stole my idea" because it's not like I have exclusive rights for using Fireworks or anything. I AM here to rant about how this big cheese webmaster - who is getting paid WAAAAY more than me, btw - should know proportionally more than me. It's great to find out that I'm not entirely clueless about my new job, but ... *sigh* :upset:

Same thing happened to me about 2 years ago. I built a really nice website using some "advanced features" for the time and got very little notice...

However, someone at HQ saw my work, implemented it into theirs, and then *Surprise* they are heralded as being "so inovative" and "wonderful" for coming up with this idea and presenting it to the masses...

I guess they never realized that my page was up for almost 9 months before that one... Dayuum bastids pretty much stole my code and took all the credit.

Oh well...since we all work for the "same group" of folks, nothin' much I could do about it.

Often times, when you're an employee, "internal marketing" of yourself is a necessary and vital skill most people miss. Oftentimes, and this is less a "man, I wish it didn't happen" as opposed to a human reality, preception is far more important than actual skill. Sure, eventually, the twain shall meet, but in the short- to medium-term, you have to not only be able to produce, but convince those in the right positions that you can produce.

A very important realization I'm just coming to, and something I think a lot of people much older than me never come to.

It's the old "toot your own horn or somebody else will use it as a spittoon" situation.

And that is another reason to freelance. That way, you deal with real clients, real work, real money and the client more than likely loves your work and will be willing to pay you again to do another project later...heck, more othen than not, he'll like you so much, he'll refer his/her friends to you. :)

Update ...

We sent out an email to all our web peeps, asking for opinions on the new drop-downs. A co-worker, who had advised me to "toot my own horn" a month ago, was kind enough to mention me in his reply to my boss:

The new dropdown menus, as seen at <URL>, are constructed in Fireworks, which Judy has also been using for her own menu creation. The fact that Judy has already been testing with Fireworks for some time, and the mere fact that the menus were constructed in Fireworks further reinforces their compatability with the three major javascript varations. I think you will be all right to release using these new menus.*sigh* Nice co-workers are so difficult to come by. Now if I can manage to keep my job, all will be well ...

That is soo cool of your co worker to do that..usually everybody is looking out for themselves. When you move up the ladder, remember them.
