View Full Version : Why are they called "rims" ?
My coffee cup has a rim, but it's not a rim. My dinner plate has a rim, but it's not a rim. The wheels on my cars have rims, but they're not rims, they're wheels.
Why do so many people incorrectly call wheels rims?

Hmm. . . I'm not really sure on this one either. My guess is though, without the tires. . . they are rims. So you put tires on the rim of the wheel. . . oy vey thats pushing it on my deducing skills.

No stop all this nonsense!!!
Webster says "
Pronunciation: 'rim
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English rima; akin to Old Norse rimi strip of land
Date: 13th century
1 a : BRINK b : the outer often curved or circular edge or border of something
2 a : the outer part of a wheel joined to the hub usually by spokes b : a removable outer metal band on an automobile wheel to which the tire is attached"
I'm still trying to figure out why we drive on parkways and park in driveways. :D

Well, sorry, Mr. Merriam-Webster. Incorrect, my ass.
"What's a rimjob?"
"Oh, well that's when you put your legs behind your head and someone licks your ass!"

ok, so, maye "rims" developed from people using those fake 2-piece wheels (you know, - the ones with all the hex-head bolts in the outter rim, that were for looks only) and they wanted to be "cool" and started calling them "rims"
wither that, or everyone forgot the difference between wheels and tires. tires being the rubber, and wheels being the metal, and they forgot that there had already been words invented for both parts.

Personally, I think rims is just an old "carryover" term that has survived time...
Unlike "mags" which went out in the late 70s early 80s... (BTW, I had "mags" on a '78 Monza that I was drivin' back in the day... :hihi: ) "Mags" is OK cuz it defines a certain style of wheel. Calling wheels "rims" is like calling the case of your computer a "CPU" - it caters to the sheep, and we do WAY too much of that, you know?
