Why are they called "rims" ?

My coffee cup has a rim, but it's not a rim. My dinner plate has a rim, but it's not a rim. The wheels on my cars have rims, but they're not rims, they're wheels.

Why do so many people incorrectly call wheels rims?

Hmm. . . I'm not really sure on this one either. My guess is though, without the tires. . . they are rims. So you put tires on the rim of the wheel. . . oy vey thats pushing it on my deducing skills.

ok, so, maye "rims" developed from people using those fake 2-piece wheels (you know, - the ones with all the hex-head bolts in the outter rim, that were for looks only) and they wanted to be "cool" and started calling them "rims"

wither that, or everyone forgot the difference between wheels and tires. tires being the rubber, and wheels being the metal, and they forgot that there had already been words invented for both parts.

Calling wheels "rims" is like calling the case of your computer a "CPU" - it caters to the sheep, and we do WAY too much of that, you know?
