I am signed up with Charter Pipeline Cable access. I am considering buying my own modem to save on the $5/mo rental fee. Any ideas on which modems I should think about purchasing? I know there have been problems with 3Com modems and @Home, but I haven't heard anything about problems with Pipeline. I'm leaning towards the 3Com modems strictly out of price since they're cheaper now that 3Com is getting out of the cable modem biz. Any thoughts?

Oh did I by chance mention 3Com? Screw other brands especially like motorolla's and the others.

I've got a 3Com that I love. I'm on @Home and have not had a single problem, other than the cable guy not knowing what kind of modem I had (HomeConnect that looks like a sharkfin). But, with DOCSIS, the install guy just has to know A.) The modem is DOCSIS compliant and B.) Don't touch my computer. ;)

I have a Terayon, which isn't that bad, but 3Com if definitely the best (I only got the Terayon because my cable co. made me :( )

I have RoadRunner and was one of the first people to sign um in my area. That was over a year ago so I have the 3Com modems that they were giving before the sharkfins. Never a problem.

The one I have is a style similar to this router:

It's too bad that 3Com thinks they can't compete with Cisco and are getting out of the enterprise networking business and deeming End Of Life on all of those products. I guess they don't want to do cable modems either.
