My reasoning for not searching for other threads and *yes* I have my reasons, is because who actually looks through 10 page threads anyway. I like my threads fresh, like a freshly peeled potato.

that's true, no one lookls through 10 page posts, but that's no reason to start a new one. when you post your desktop, it bumps the thread back to the top and people would see your as the next in line. no reason to start a new thread if you ask me...but no one asked me....

well, i'm not going to turn this into a lecture on the data retrieval habits of G|A users...but...if your intent was to see others' desktops, then you would BENEFIT from reading through a 10 page thread...you'd get to see everyone's.

now if your intent was to start a thread simply for the sake of seeing your name in the topic starter column, then you've achieved your goal.

if anyone but yourself posted a 'post your desktop' thread every week, i think you'd get annoyed.

Pretty plain lookin' desktop but notice the upper right hand corner. I got sick of trying to find my media files so i wrote a program using php/mysql to keep track of all of them. Now all the files are easily found through a simple search engine. I also modified my desktop so that i have the search engine right on there. (Some stuff blured on purpose.)

Its possible and i tried to make the script as modular as i could but its still pretty customized, you'ld have to invest a good while getting it to work on your system, not to mention you'd need a php/mysql server running off of *nux (perhaps i could make it run on win32 but i've never programmed for it). But IMHO its worth it just cause i invested a whooooooole lotta time into it and its nice to see the results.

I might have to install a *Nix box in here just to run that. BTW, do the actual mp3s have to reside on teh box running the web server? Also does your application support wma, ogg, etc?

the mp3's are on a 40 gig inside the *nix box so... yes :)
I only have mp3's and movies on here but support for other media files shouldn't be too hard to implement. If your planning on running such a program on a closed network then the script can be very flexable since you can link directly to the files but this is running on an exposed network so i have to add passwords and the mp3 player doesn't display the song title because of the way i designed it. Its a work in progress, almost everyday i have a new idea for it. Lately i've been trying to get it to work with media player so i can play the movies from it.
