So off of the thread about which browser you use, I got to thinking, how the hell does Netscape make money? There's no way enough people buy it to keep them in business. PLus, you can download it anywhere. How do these fools make money?

I think advertising off of their main page. And inclusion of AIM, realplayer, etc. But I doubt that adds up to a lot, so

Well at my job we offer tech support for that particular browser...

It costs, I think about 29.95, somewhere along there

do they own iplanet or something? what was up with that link.

also, why would you need tech support for Netscape? It ain't that hard of a program.

Can necessarily answer that question cause I dont work in that department...but I know quite a few people call there for support, I personally have given the number to eu that call-in, in the dept. I work in, and can say there not to happy when they find out they have to pay for support

Sun Microsystems owns iPlanet, but they partner with Netscape to provide some services through iPlanet.

Anywho, how does Netscape make money? Netscape as a browser is essentially an advertising vehicle and a means to drive traffic to other sites. Companies will pay good money to be among the default bookmarks - it's valuable real estate - in a similar, yet clearly smaller way, as having space on the Windows Desktop.

In a similar vein, it serves as a good platform for AOL Time Warner to push other products such as AIM (automatically installed when you dl Netscape Communicator) or AOL . . .

Further, with the default homepage being the Netscape portal, it ups the number of page views, which also ups the amount Netscape can charge for advertising space on the page.

And of course, as in the case with iPlanet, I'm sure Netscape does participate in plenty of partnership ventures.

Didn't AOL buy Netscape outright? Netscape doesn't need to make any money, it just has to provide the browser software so the other Time Warner business units can use it.

being an AOL/TW employee, i know how netscape makes money...by keeping my salary low.

seriously though, yes AOL/TW owns netscape and all of its subsidiaries, therefore...there is no need for them to make money, the bastard media monopoly that is AOL/TW owns them

yes, i hate my job
