Are some CD's uncopyable?

I have the game the Sims... I tried to burn a copy for my laptop so that I could install it at work. (I didn't want to take the original with me). Well it wouldn't work.

I have heard that the same thing happens with Civ3.

Comments?

Well, I don't have a lot of experience with, eh hem, backing up games, but I've made a few observations...

Some of the newer games are getting harder to copy, but it really depends what software you use. I've had so-so results with Nero, but I've had my best results with Disk Juggler. I hear CDR win is okay though...

Oh, and try writing to an image, if you haven't already.

Well there are a lot of different methods companies use to make sure their CD's cant be copied, here (http://www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom/cd_protections.shtml) is a link explaining the different methods used. There are of course ways around it, you can always visit www.gamecopyworld.com for information regarding a specific game.

Here's the thing....look on the CD right around the inner ring...you can see little bar codes that make that CD lagit. And without that little bar code...some CD's are uncopyable.

I find that kind of hard to swallow, because, if your computer can read the data, it can copy the data.

That is why there is such a big problem with the Record Industries and mp3s. That new CD that came out for Michael Jackson was one of the first "uncopiable" CDs. The problem: computers can't read it. I guess that is the one good thing about computer games; if a computer can't read/copy it, it is no longer a computer game.

The problem is that some writers can't write to a certain subchannel in the cd, it can read but not write.

The plexwriter 16x can copy some protected cds but it'll only work when played with the burner itself. I've decided to settle with the Lite-on 24x, it'll copy safedisc2 out of the box. Don't get me wrong, plextors are very nice drives but it dries out the wallet fast.

I'm a firm believer that if someone can build it, someone else can take it apart. if they can code the CD protection then some fool with time on his hands is gonna figure out how beat the protection. it's just he principle of being denied the ability to do whatever you want. I wouldn't worry. and even if they protect those things like Fort Knox, what's the worst that could happen, we have to ugh *swallow* go legit and pay for stuff.

the honest to God truth is that I don't use MP3s unless I own the CD and I don't cpy CDs, games, movies etc. It's illegal and I'm not afraid of gettin caught or anything, I'm just morally opposed to it.

overburning is becominga big thing in copying. also some companies are putting like "huge files" on their disc. I remember i tried copying Delta Force II: Land Warrior, and there was a file that was like negative a million or something...was really odd..

I don't. Most MP3s are illegally copied, but you're right, not all. Like I said, I have MP3s of the music I own.

It makes bit per bit copies of CDs. They have a trial version that only burns at 1x. If you want full speed burning you will need to buy it. Other than that there are no functional limitations.

ive had great results with my plex 12/10/32 and clonecd. the only thing i havent been able to copy is max payne which uses safedisc2. other than that, ive made backups (yes, legit backups) of almost all my cds and they seem to work on any cd drive.

as for brainsmiles original post, the sims cd is copy protected as are most recent games and some software. those bar codes on the inner band of some cds cant even be read by some cd drives and most cd writers cant write to that area. the first thing you should do is find out what copy protection it uses. try clony or cd copy protection detection. these will tell you what settings to use with clonecd. i know you can copy sims this way.

2)Music CD's with copy protection in fact has been defeated - for now. Seems they worked so damn hard making it impossible on PC's, they failed to think about Linux and Mac's - heheh.

Not that anything stops you from say, poping it into a normal CD player and recording it through the audio port.

Chances are, either your burner could not copy the data correctly, or the burner software you used failed to bring over an important piece. This is pretty common with safe disc protected disks, or some laser lock protected ones. Best thing to do is to install it from the original CD, then get a no-cd patch at gamecopyworld.
