But instead I am here, posting at G|A... the class is such a waste anyway, the teacher says we are all required to have TI-86 calculators, I have the TI-83 and I'm not really in the mood to spend another $120 on a calculator. Then during class all he does is explain how to do the examples with the calculator, so it doesn't even apply to me. One good note though, I got a B+ on my last test, and that's because I go to class and study on my own, not paying attention to him.

heh, someone's making good use of his time posting on G|A :)

hehe. why study when you can post on G|A? (do I see a bumper sticker in the making?)

or a tee-shirt...i think there should be one representative on every campus that where's one...everyday..nah, better make it a wednesday (when we've finally sobered up from the weekend, and right before the next weekend)

Hehe, class? Its useless to go to class unless if there is an exam. . . even then. . .

What you need is a TI-92!!! Now thats a calculator

Pfft, I'll hold on to my ti-89 instead. Does about the same stuff as the 92 but a lot smaller. Just doesn't do as many geometric crap, but hey geometry=easy.

everything can be easy if you hav the right programs:cool:

I am in college calculus and i don't even use my TI 83 that much(only for doing multiplication and division of large numbers). There is a handbook on how to use my calculator but it is as thick as the bible and most of my school books. I never had the desire to read it. Why do they make the handbooks that big anyways? They should have a condensed version for people like me who are too lazy to read it all. As you have probably guessed I do not know how to do much on my calculator, I still have not mastered using the graphing tools  :P Who cares I only have one more year of math. But still why such a thick handbook for such a small item.:shake:

for real math you don't need a calculator. it's all conceptual or done in the brain. i'm a chemistry/material science major at UCLA and the most I ever need is a scientific calculator to do basic math and trig functions. all this TI-this and TI-that is a waste of time. I own one, but I don't even know how to use it. some profs won't let you bring in a fancy calc so you don't "program" equations in it. the point is to learn math, not learn a calculator.
just my 1.5 cents.

Well, my class "strongly suggests" getting a TI86 for the students to be "succesful". Bah, I hate them. Anyway, it was fun posting when I'm supposed to be in class, gave me that "living on the edge" feeling... :heh:

If I were to drive, it'd be illegal. And plus, you don't want to be near me if I drive anyway.

Shouldn't need a calculator for calculus, but those who say real math requires no fancy calculator have not done enough regression analysis. Fewer than .05% of the simplest differential equations can be solved exactly using calculus. The rest require approximation by various statistical computational methods and models and we're talking about a LOT of tedious number crunching there. The advent of computers really was a breakthrough for mathemeticians in this field. Sped up their work by a matter of YEARS.
