i need your opinions on this one...
i am but a poor man who is need of a new monitor. and i am debating between a flat panel and a good ole CRT. according to my friend named visa, i have about $400 to spend.
so any suggestions? i read some reviews, even some here on got|apex, and i narrowed it down to either samsung 570vTFT 15" or the samsung 700NF 17". but your opinions are more than welcome...

personally i'd rather have a large good quality crt than a small lcd, but if your deciding between those two go for the lcd, the viewable area of the lcd is very close to the crt, takes up less space and doesn't flicker.

Depends what you're doing. Video and games, crt. Text and web browsing, lcd. The problem with the affordable lcds is that the refresh rate is too low so you get a lot of fading and bluring which becomes irritating.

haha...thx for your suggestions.
the only reason i'm looking into flat panels now is cuz the prices have dropped some...plus i need all the space i can get on my desk. i guess this is also why i can't get a 19".
the monitor i have now is quite old and has served me well...i'm hoping that i can say this about my new monitor in the years to come.

Because tv resolution is the crappiest of all, unless it be a hdtv or one of them fancy smancy wega's.

I agree with DF. For what it sounds like your needs are, I'd go with the Hitachi CM615 or 625 (bottom of same link).

I have the samsung that you are talking about. That crt is a great screen...i like it lots....if it were up to me, I would get a crt because the dot pitch is way better....I know that tft's really don't use dot pitch ratings...but It's just a whole lot better.
Personally I would use the crt for gaming and stuff like that...If it were just for regular work and movies...stuff like that...I would not mind the tft's.(movies even...I think I would like to watch it better on the crt)

ok, is there a significant difference between the 700NF and the 753DF if i used them both at 1024x768?

i have a fancy smancy wega and it is no good as a monitor. so unless youre a po' man with a hdtv and a REALLY GOOD vivo card, get a good monitor. IMO, the best monitor is a big (17" viewable or larger) crt with a good refresh rate. also, the flatter, the better.

From what I have seen, the DF is a lot better. I have the 955DF which is the 19" version. My best friend has the 753DF though and it is an awesome, INEXPENSIVE monitor. For an all around screen, I'd go with a CRT because an LCD is more of a luxury and at times it can be a hassle because of viewing angels, refresh rates and what not. You'd have to spend a ****load of cash if you want a really good LCD. Save yourself the money and get the 753DF, I think.

I just bought an NEC MultiSync 18" LCD and so far games look pretty sweet on this baby! I had a Sony HMD-A200 before and it also performed very nicely... but the LCD is just damn cool!

I have a Viewsonic model A75s which isn't CRT just a normal .22 Monitor but it was pretty darn cheap and has served me great over the past 2 and a half years. Another great thing about it is that it isn't a very deep monitor. Compared to other 17" monitors it takes up a really small amount of space. 2 and a half years ago this monitor was just under $200 if memory serves me right, it should be considerably cheaper now.
So this may be an option for you also.
