Guys help me out here,
Ok i import a video from my DV cam into premier the thing takes up an insane ammount of space, so i compress it.

Now finally the file is like 2MB however there is only sound and the picture is just black
Anyone know what the hell is up with this?

Also for some reason my preview in the project window and also that other window is black, although the clip plays fine in the clip window

Gonna need to be more specific. What codec did you use and at what bitrate, etc?

Ok any codec that i use, divx 4.01, APVC, microsoft mpeg 4, all of those codecs return the same result.

What's really weird and i think is a part of this problem, when i import the file clip, it doesn't have the thumbnails, instead of them there is just a black nothingness. Anyone knows what might be causing this

What player are you trying to play them on? I also suggest trying another codec to make sure its not something with premiere itself.

i used several different players and it's not premiere because if i use the same encoders on movies i already have and it works fine, but those movies also have the thumbnails :(
the first time i captured the movie it had the thumbnails but now when i capture the movies they have no thumbs

Wait so when you capture your video it has the problem first? You will want to capture at the default catpruing thing. . . like pure avi. Then edit the file. Then recompile it to the codec of your choice. That could be your problem since the card isn't fast enough to capture the video and compress it into a codec all on the fly. You first need to capture it raw.

but that's what i do, i capture it raw in like avi DV, and when i recompile it to compress it i get the black screen. i think it's not working for the same reason as i don't have those thumbnails, any ideas?

What are you running on? I doubt thats the problem. Anyhow what other codecs have you tried?

Well i'm running win2k, and i have tried windows multimedia codecs, realplayer, quick time, mpeg 4 compression, a whole bunch of stuff and it just doesn't work.

I've seen this problem before. Try compressing it with Divx 4.11 and then play it with The Playa (http://www.projectmayo.com/projects/detail.php?projectId=3)

Usually this results from one of two issues. One is that the file is not being completed when compresses, but I don't think that's the issue because you haven't mentioned any error messages. The other issue is that Windows is not recognizing the codec used for compression. Reinstall the codec's used for compression. If you are using one that was included with Premiere, you may need to reinstall premeire.

BTW - I have had problems with the Microsoft MPEG-4 codec in general. Stick to something like Divx 4.

How long are the movies you are importing? How large are the files?

ok well i used a different piece of software to capture the video, and then compressed it, it works perfectly fine.... this leaves me believing that premiere is screwing with me

so, let's say for a 7 minute video, how much space would these encodings take?
avi....dvix.....quicktime....etc.

also, where can i find these plugins?
are they free???
