Man, this totally sucks. I went to Best Buy today and my check card was denied. I thought it was just something wrong with Best Buy, so I tried the card at a gas station later. Denied again.
I tried to check my online statement tonight but I got a communication error where the balances shoudl have been. I checked again later and see two charges that I did not to SprintPCS for $146.30 on 11/21 in Overland Park, Kansas (I don't live in Kansas!) and one to AT&T CALL for $6.60 on 11/23. The 23rd was the Friday after Thanksgiving. I did not do a single thing that day besides watch movies and TV with my family, so I know that I did not place an AT&T call that day - or ever for that matter!
Now I have to wait until normal business hours to call my credit union to dispute the charges. I will try calling card services again to cancel my card, too.
This just sucks!

So I just talked with a gentleman at card services. I was informed that my card was put on hold on the 19th because of a charge for SprintPCS. This charge did not show up on my credit union account until the 21st. Any charge after the 19th should have been denied, but there are 4 more charges after that day, one by me via checkcard at a liquor store (I don't know how it got authorized) and one by me via check. For some reason my credit union was still processing the charges even though the card is on hold. Strange...
Anyway, the card is cancelled and I am being issued a new one. I must fill out a form stating which charges are mine and I should get all unauthorized charges refunded. In the end, everything works out just fine, but it's just a big hassle!

In the end, everything works out just fine, but it's just a big hassle! Yup. Remember that news story about a year ago when Egghead.com got hacked and a bunch of credit card numbers were stolen? Well, I was affected by that. My bank decided - without informing me - that they would cancel my card to keep me safe. I was without a card for an entire week - and understand that I rarely carry cash, I just use my debit card. SO, I had to change about 6 accounts that automatically draw from my debit card - a pain in the neck.
AND THEN - my new card expired after only two months, which was when my 1st card would've expired anyway - even though my new card had a much later expiration date on it. So I had to update my 6 accounts AGAIN. I was not amused.
It all worked out in the end with me only being shorted a couple hours time, but still... With people like this looking out for me, who needs enemies?

This happened to me recently to the only Visa (or MasterCard) that I had and I had to wait a week for the new account number to arrive. I was really pressed during that period when I came upon the chance to get in on the Windows XP deal from Microsoft which would only take Visa or MasterCard (so I used my daughter's Visa account). This convinced me to get another card (I used the Juniper MasterCard that sometimes gets promoted on the deals page) so I would always have a backup.

I much prefer to use a credit card and then just pay off the balance at the end of the month. At least that way you have a chance to dispute any charges before they put a dent in your bank book.
Debit cards are just plain dangerous IMO.
yup yup..
that's what i do...
I got charged some weirdo charge on my debit card, and I couldn't do much about it, cause they took the $$ from my bank, instead of a CC who could've done somethin about it...
so, yeah, I always use CC and pay it off...of course, I forgot to this month :bawl:

Last Wednesday Discover called and told me that my card had been "compromised". I tried to ask them what had happened, but the girl on the phone didn't know.....anyway, they supposedly sent out a new card and canceled my old one. The weird thing was that there are no charges on it that I didn't make, and I didn't lose my card, so I guess someone must have stolen something from Discover with a bunch of card numbers on it, or maybe hacked into thier computer system....strange happenings.
