My brother-who has worked for IBM for 29 years, was hit with their layoff today..Two kids still in college, and one in high school yet. This guy has never called in sick-EVER,NOT EVEN ONCE in 29 years and has only taken days off when they made it mandatory..They called the employees into the office in alphabetical order (like being filed into a gas chamber if you ask me)..and said.."Sorry, we have to let you go,Please turn your badge in to me right now. You have 10 minutes to say goodbye to your friends, and then 5 minutes to remove your possessions from your locker." And they escorted these guys one by one, through their departments so they could say goodbye to everyone, then right to their lockers, and then out the door. I guess it was a horrible scene. and Outside the door stood 46 men from one single department who have all worked together for over 20 years. Not a word was said..just grown men standing their wiping the tears off their faces. IBM SUCKS.

That's terrible, but believe it or not, IBM did extend some courtesies. At Sprint, they called each of them into a conference room, asked them their name, social, badge, took the stuff, and told them to leave. Escorted them out to their car in silence.

In any case, it's really the legal department that you want to bitch at. Those guys and HR are doing CYA.

Ah yes - the ol' switcheroo. I've seen several companies do it, including AT&T. During a tough time, they let go all the people who have been there forever and are pulling down a large salary. Six months later, they replace the positions with kids fresh out of college at 1/3 - 1/4 of the cost. Gotta love corporate America...
