Ok, long story. Will be short. (NO jokes. :P )

My hubby started working at the Social & Rehabilitation Services center (state job - doing welfare, child support, etc) as a computer tech for the area in mid-June. Anyway, he was put on a 6-month probationary period, which should end December 18th, when it will be made a permanent position and he'll get a raise, etc. (That is how all the comp. jobs are, not just him.) Two days ago, SRS started handing out pink slips around the office & throughout the area. There are only 3 tech people for 25 offices, so Scott's job wasn't in jeopardy.

Come to find out, they are thinking of closing 10 of the smaller offices, leaving only 15. Who knows what that will do to the tech jobs! But, we know the top of the 3 people may be getting a job in Topeka at the head office, so that would leave 2, which basically means job security, right?

In the mail today, there was a letter stating that all jobs that are on probationary periods right now, the probationary periods are being extended indefinitely. The dates it gives that all the possible firings could happen are from January 1, 2002-December 31, 2003! That's 2 years!!!!

The letter went on to say that the reason for the extended probationary period is that if someone that is already in a permanent position wants to change jobs, they can try and bump you! WTF is up with that??

Anyway, that's the story. *sigh*

That is terrible. Sorry Jenny.

The government isn't any better than other companies. Fire the lower people so that the administration can keep their nice bonuses and drive their nice cars. To bad it's so hard to find a tech job these days.

I'd suggest looking around for another job just in case... Maybe you'll find a better job with better pay and much better job security :D

The only problem is...he is getting a Christmas bonus (Or is SUPPOSED to get!) of 10% of his yearly income (about $1200 after taxes) on Dec. 7th. If he quits within a year of getting that, we have to pay it back... :(

Is it legal for them to do that? Your hubby accepted the job with the understanding that the probationary period would be only 6 months. Can they legaly extend that period without disciplinary action?

Apparently yes. He had not signed papers making him permanent status yet, so... There might have been something at the beginning that he signed that said it could be extended, but I have no idea. :(
