I have a question...when I'm on lan...and I have things shared on a folder that I've declared...how do I put a password so that only my close friends see it...I don't see a option to have the folder password protected...somebody do tell me how...thx

You set user permissions, not passwords. Right click the folder and go to Sharing... and click the permissions button. Remove 'Everyone' and add the IDs of the people who should be able to connect to your share. Also, if you're running NTFS on that drive, right-click the folder again, choose Properties, then the security tab. Make the same changes here. This way, if you accidentially share a parent folder, people will still be unable to reach your 'private' share.

If you're on a workgroup instead of a domain, you won't be able to pick names off of a list for access. In this case, just make an account on your local machine, give that account access to the share, and give that ID and password to the people who need access.

there is not tab or button called "permissions"...where to go from there?:eek:

its not permissions its sharing

then after that...What do I do...I still can't see the permissions key anywhere...after I go into sharing:confused:

You have to set permissions on the share.....

You right-click the folder, go to 'Sharing and Security', there should be a 'permissions' button on that window. At least that's the case with XP Pro. Which version of XP are you running?

I'm using the pro ver. I still don't know what I do after that!

OK, after you right click the folder you want to share, click on 'Sharing and Security'. Do you see that in your menu? Make sure you're logged in with an account with local admin rights...
