Hey peeps, I'm a noo-b when it comes to home DVD players and systems/theaters. My mom and I are gonna get my dad a DVD player for his B-day and I'm looking for recommendations. My budget is less than $300, preferable around the 200 range. I plan to add a whole theater speaker system to it so I need it to be "upgradable" to support such a thing. I'm definately looking for quality in picture and sound, and I don't care so much for MP3 read capabilities, but it would be a nice extra.
Any help would be great thanx.
Please don't just throw in names of player without giving me a reason, I wanna learn about the features of DVD players, thanx.

Ok thanx for the two threads, unfortunately they didn't help. I will look into the Sony one, but I will probably prefer progressive scan and multi-region capabilities.

how bout that?
I'm just throwing up suggestions here...

Darkfury: yeah you're probably right about the progressive scan. I don't see my parents getting a HDTV anytime soon. However, the multiregion option is something that I would definately like, but it wont be the end of the world if I dont get that option, plus it is for my dad not me. (but I'll probably use it more than him ;-)
There are two that have caught my eye so far: The Toshiba SD2300 and the Toshiba SD4700. They seem to offer a good amount of features and a good price range. Any experience with those?
attgig: thanx for the link, I'll look into that one too, but I'm not really a walmart fan... ;-)

The toshibias are very good, and rate highly. However, do not get them if you plan on using a Non-HDTV big screen tv, as they tend to artifact badly, lots of grain.
However, for standard tube TV's, HDTV's, Trinitrons, etc, they rock.
Also, the sony line is very nice, as are the pioneers. The JVC's can be really buggy POS.
