I was wondering is the dvd playback on the ps2 good enough to be my only dvd player? Is there any drawbacks to its capabilities if all I want to do is simply watch the movie, not play with features. Does it not play some dvds? Please list all pros and cons. One con I can think of is that you use the controller as a remote, right?

it is good enough to be your only dvd player. think of the playback quality as good as an entry level sony dvd player. you can get an ir remote for 10 to 30 bucks, there are positives and negatives to each different remote. the downside to using it as your only dvd player is that there are some dvd's that wont play on the playstation. some can be played after a software upgrade.

i don't know if i'm 100% sold on its quality, i've had a few problems with inconsistent play...stuttering and skipping the first few seconds of chapters.
of course, i'm comparing it to an onkyo dr-90 (my primary dvd player) so i may be a bit biased.
all in all, the ps2 is a good player, but it's nothing i'd build a home theater system around.

I think it's good enough for a regular basic DVD
player. I know that the PS2 does not play VCDs

I think it is a decent dvd player considering it is also a game machine. But I found the picture to be dark and not crisp enough. But that was easily fixed by buying some nice cables, I only have S-video, no component on my tv... but better cables really helped the picture a lot. So if you are considering using it for a dvd player you might want to get good cables too, or at least try some out to see the difference.

I have yet to see a DVD player that would make me say, "Wow... this is much better than the playback I get with the PS2." You need a remote, though... I recommend the Sony remote. It comes with software that makes the remote work like a real remote... not just a wireless game pad.
I also find that problems with playback (on all DVD players) is most often related to the disc itself, rather than the player.

I mean... a PS2 is nice as a dvd player but that's not really what you're buying it for. So expect less than average quality with lockups. I'd just go buy another one for that purpose

i have a sony reference dvd player, that makes the PS2 look like a 2 head vcr.
get good cables, you want all the advantage you can get.
