I have the Pro full version. I tried to upgrade 98 instead of doing a full install. XP aborted the installation because of a hardware (my Adaptac SCSI card,I think) and software conflict (EasyCreator conflict). Problem was when it reverted to 98, it lost everything in My Documents, about 18 gig of documents and jpegs. I spent hours trying to get through to Microsoft and they said it is a know issue and to consider it nonrecoverable data. I took their suggestion and did an Fdisk and then a full install. That worked, but XP keeps freezing, ctrl, alt, delete is useless. I will contact them on Monday to see why this is happening. Other problems are, I keep getting an error harddrive is almost full but I'm only using 2.5 gigs just for XP on my 40 gig harddrive, other problems when computer is not touched, it must go into some kind of power management or Hybernate, I can't get the computer to respond without shutting down. Anyone else have these problems?

I had quite a few problems in the beginning too.
Try this...
Fdisk the whole drive... or w/ XP just delete it in the setup...
create your partitions...
format it in fat32... i tried ntfs.. and got freezes...
after that mess is installed.. make sure you install all the critical updates via M$...
if you want to install easy cd creator.. avoid installing the direct cd and the take two options w/ the software.
That should do it!
Although I hated XP as everyone knows.. i like it now... it's so purrrrdy. I finally got my Easy CD Creator 5 to work along w/ my CDRwin.

Thanks guys for your help, but I did do an Fdisk and a full clean install, I also have XP Pro, the full version. I did not use ntfs and still have a very unstable system. It locks up frequently and ctrl, alt, delete is useless when that happens. I also get a constant error "low disk space" though I only have XP installed and my harddrive is 36 gig free.
Also, does can someone tell me how to disable Windows attempt to do a duel boot even though I only have one OS, also I would like to disable XP asking for a password everytime I boot up, I think that is some kind of Network preferences, I went through that with 98 and was able to dissable that but forgot how I did it.

pd123, run gpedit.msc. You'll find almost every admin option under the sun there, including the password option. Try reading up on tricks and mods at http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/ I found a lot of helpful information there.

If you did a fdisk and a full clean install why are you getting the dual boot screen???
Sounds like you may have overlooked something.

I'm using Win2k Pro too but my HP printer is having problems with the ECP port connect, gotta restart my comp everytime I start (which takes 2 min since shutdown takes forever and start takes forever...)

if you didnt know, HP loads way too much sht in their driver. it loads at startup, and then makes sure it communicates.
HP is now notorious for this. i use a networked printer so my machine doesnt have to load it. maybe yo should try it if you have two machines.

Sounds like you may have overlooked something. I have no idea why I get a duel boot option, The two options I get are to run WindowsXP and the other option is to run Windows (doesn't specify which Windows) I choose XP but I also tried clicking on "Windows" option but that doesn't boot anything as I would expect. I think I may be getting the option because when you do an Fdisk you have to run the following command as quoted from the directions to do an fdisk, "formatc:/s, this command transfers the system files and is only to be used when formating drive C and this makes the computer bootable.
BTW, G_Sub, thanks for your lead for http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/ I will do as you said.

I'm wondering, how did you format? You might want to go back through and format with DOS again. Another possibility, this happened to a friend of mine with Win 2k, do you have another hard drive in your system. My friend had Win 95 installed on one of his slave drives, and when W2K was installing, it detected the OS on the slave drive and automatically set up a dual boot...

I do have a second harddrive, but I physically unplugged it before this proceedure and have yet to plug it back in. The second harddrive is a mirror image so I can fall back to that if need be.

First make a boot disk. In case its needed.
Second set your bios to boot from cdrom first.
Third Reformat the drive format c: (no system tranfer)
Forth Insert Winxp cd, reboot and reinstall.
I have xp runnning on an old Quantex 200mhz and it installed no problem. It runs great, recognized all my hardware, even the HP burner.

I have been communicationg with a tech support from Microsoft and she figured out my problems. I should have guessed that Compaq was at the bottom of my problems, though I think Microsoft should be also held respondsible. I have a Compaq Presario model 5660, Pentium 450. That model has no support from Compaq for XP, there are no drivers for my video card and a few other things like the numeric keypad. I will try to find drivers somewhere else like http://www.software.drivers.com/ or somewhere, any have any suggestions?
This will be my last Compaq computer.

Good for you.
Of course, I think, if everyone in this thread knew that you had a pre-built system, the advice might have come much faster. I guess everyone here just assumes that you have a custom built computer.

I had the exact same problem - it was with a new dell that i bought for my mom. It came with XP Home, and as soon as i got it i wiped the drive and put on 2k Pro. It still came up with that dual boot option. The way to disable that is
Control Panel -> system -> Advanced -> Startup and recovery
You can change the options there. Why it showed up in the 1st place .... i have no idea.
I know it was a clean install, there was no boot partition, there was no other partitions. I deleted the primary (and only) partition before i built up 2k. Who knows??? WIerd problem!
