I currently have 2 PC's running W98SE on my lan. I am using TCP for the internet connection and NetBUI for local traffic ie: printer and file sharing. I do not have printer and file sharing bound to TCP for security purposes.

I just got a Dell Inspiron 8100 with WinXP Home and installed a wireless network card. It works great. Even though I am able to surf the net via one of the PC's running W98SE and Sygate as the gateway, I can not ping any of the computers on the network from the wireless, nor can I ping the wireless from any of the other computers on the network. Is there something I am missing? I tried the ol' Run -> ping 10.0.0.1 which is the computer connected to the net, and nothing. However I am able to surf from the wireless with no problem.

My second question is, when I was setting up my network properties on the 8100, NetBUI was not an option for adding protocols. Did Microsoft do away with NetBUI in XP? I prefer to do my file and printer sharing with something other than TCP. I see the only other option is IPX/SPX. Should I just dump NetBUI on all machines and go with IPX protocol for local sharing?

I remember reading about a similar topic in an earlier post. Try and check some of the threads in this forum from about a month or so ago. I want to say that the title of the tread was "Networking XP" or something like that... :hmm: hmm... or maybe it was "XP 'explative, explative', or "XP $&%(&* *&%^&$^%, *(&^*&(*^ XP" :heh:

I belive it is because XP doesn't use NetBUI, try the IPX/SPX
