View Full Version : Win2k Networking prob...2 comps can't see each other, internet sharing works

Earlier i submitted a problem with my internet sharing not working, but the computers could see each other just fine. Now, the internet connection sharing works with the 2 comps, one being a gateway to ATTbi. I don't get it, they're both in the same workgroup, and the lan is active, supposedly, but yet they can't find each other. Any ideas?!

What happens if you search for it in "My Network Places"?

Is Netbeui installed?

no show, they can only find themselves. can't search for 'em, its as if the network isn't up, but internet sharing says it is... NetBeui?
I don't remember installing it, the weird thing is that it was working for 2 months or so, then something happened the network died on us.

c'mon...hub costs money, and i'm not sure if a hub would help this issue.

so i should have both those accounts set in both computers?
well, i want to avoid using a router if possible, just for economics, and i don't particularly NEED it.

just delete all the network stuff for both computers and reboot. It will re-install all default stuff and you can add other protocals that you need. That has always seemed to work for me. ;)

shouldnt need Netbeui with 2k.
Can you ping the other machine? with most windows OS, if the machine doesnt have a share open, it will not show up under network neighborhood.

can they ping eachother?

the thing is, Win2k is pretty secure, so most of the things you are telling him to do is common for a win9x machine. But in an NT machine you have to give "priveledges" for people to access it. You can't just plug it in to a network and let it just work. Not that easy. i believe the easist way to do is the file and printer sharing is to make "guest" accounts with passwords and such, so each computer "logs" onto each other. You can probably do a search in your help files for "guest" and stuff or do a seach at google.

First I guesss i should try to make sure that the account on one computer is an account on the other, correct?

If that doesn't work, uninstall the TCP/ip stuff and reinstall it?

dont worry about 'accounts' yet if you cant even see the other computer. If the accounts were not properly set up, you would just get a "Access Denied" error when trying to access directories. You woudln't have the problem you have.

Are the two computers in the same "Workgroup"? Are you logging into a domain? Can they ping eachother by machine name? Give some more details and we can help you more! Good Luck!

Under same workgroup, yes. I left domain as nothing, since i don't think i have one? I can't seem to ping it by name, it says unknown host? To ping is to just run cmd and then type ping "Name"?

Hope this gives you more info.

well there's the problem :)
do you have a WINS server (or WINS capability on your DHCP server)? like linksys and similar routers have built in WINS, most ISPs will have wins server addressing. whats your setup?

I have the cheap setup...3 total nic's, one computer with 2-one to attbi and one to another computer. I don't really understand too much about this networking stuff, but what i do know is that this setup was working earlier on and it stopped working for unknown reasons. So...does that help?

You shouldn't need Netbeui in Win2k but it's an easy solution sometimes. Just make sure they are in the same workgroup(caps sensitive) and add NetBeui. Then you should be able to see eachother.

this may be an issue with the setup of my network (see my above post) because it appears that the moment i get my internet sharing on, they are invisible to each other or something. I have zonealarm on automatically on the gateway computer, so when i turn it off, internet sharing is enabled. Up until that point, it seems that the network with file sharing works fine.

Is there some kind of problem with having both LAN's up on the gateway computer with internet sharing? I don't yet see a solid pattern yet so everything seems rather inconsistent to me. Anyway see any glaring flaws? Btw...what IS NetBeui?
