NSS TLotR Lord of the Rings

Caught the last matinee yesterday at 4:50PM(so cal)with some friends and didnt get out til a little after 8:00PM.
Its a long and epic(in every sense of the word) movie.
I think it has something for everyone. Action, violence, good/evil,magic, dragons and a princess.
Some of the scenes and minor details(from the book) are missing or changed. Some people familiar with LotR will notice changes, those who havent read the books or dont remember them well will not.
I was very impressed with how much of the "Fellowship of the Ring" was brought to the big screen. The amount of ground that was covered was amazing. They fit a few hundred pages into 3 hours and threw in enough action to keep this very tired(got up at 4AM) "critic" wide awake. The director kept a good balance in telling J.R.R. Tolkeins story(late 1940's?) and showing a new millenium-blockbuster movie.
I recommend going to see "Lord of the Rings" and if you are into the books, etc. than you wont want to miss this.
Warning: Its very violent and not for younger kids(send them to that Potter guy or the Monsters company thingy).

I liked the movie quite a bit (saw it at a 8:30pm screening Wed :heh: ).

The only minor suckage was the Balrog. I was expecting something scarier!

I'll agree, they did one helluva job with this translation. I was disappointed when it ended because I realized that I could've honestly sat and watched the entire trilogy in one sitting (ok, maybe a pee break or two). Picking New Zealand for filming was probably the best idea the film makers had. The landscape is absolutely perfect. And even though I hate the actor that plays Sam, I think casting was nearly perfect.

That said, I'm really looking forward to seeing some new movies whose stories I don't already know. Matrix was probably the last flick I saw where the story line was relatively original and the movie itself reflected the quality of that story (speaking mostly of the Action/Adventure genre, anyway).

When are they planning to release the other parts of this? Are they doing them yearly? I think that'd be a bit of a mistake since the films are already done. Three years from now when the third part comes out, there will be some amazing movies with spectular effects, making this three year old epic a little dated.

Part II (Towers) of the LotR is slated for the same time period next yr. That will give them time to finish the special effects on II and to release the 1st one on dvd/vhs for rental/sale.
Hopefully with the better effects and everything, the story will still flow nicely. 3 yrs from now watching all 3 in a row will be long and interesting(hopefully) event. 3 hours a movie + bonus footage could make for 10+ hours of LotRs' when all is said and done. I doubt many will notice how different the effects from 4+ hours previous were.
Now for some Christmas shopping <moans>
