I traded my car in to the deal when I got my new car because of that problem. My transmission went out and it was going to cost me 1600 to fix it. It was a 7 year old car too so I figured I should junk it.
My recommendation would be to sell it if you think you can afford to get a new car. Otherwise, I'd try fixing it.

I take it, you don't know how/have the equipment to rebuild the transmission yourself... :hmm:

What model/year is your car? One thing that tends to work is going to one of the old pick and pull junk yards. If you can find a transmission for your car there, you can usually pick one up for a lot less than the replacement/rebuild cost. Just giving you another option.

If it's the AOD (Overdrive trans) that I think it is, I believe that it was a problematic trans. You may not find a decent trans in the junkyard, but then again you may. It's worth a call to a local reputable junkyard to see what one would cost and what kind of guarantee they offer on it.

No i have no idea how to rebuild the damn thing, it's a big problem taking that thing off too, because you have to take off the exhaust system, and then some **** goes over the gas tank, so it's a pain in the a$$ :(

As for a junk yard, you haven't seen junk yards in new york man, unless it's like a mirror or like some minor thing that you can test on the spot, or a door or something... then you don't go there

I know it may be a bad suggestion depending on your tax bracket, but if it is hard to sell, donating it may save more in taxes than you can sell it for. I once donated a 1976 Dodge Colt that was worthless and got a few thousand dollars towards a tax deduction which actually boiled down to me saving about $800 in taxes. Don't think too long if you want to donate it because this year is almost over.

Haha, I just saw that your location was New York. Anyway, I guess your options might only be replacing/fixing it or getting a new car.

Over here in brooklyn theres a (kinda like) junk yard (its on atlantic ave) and I think there is a few in L/I what kind of car is it? im guessing its a merc coug

I just called AAMCO and the guy said you know what buddy it might only be a cellinoid and it will run you a couple of hundred to fix. SO bring it in and we'll run a diagnostic on it.... so this is how i figure...

cellinoid $250
Peace of mind .... priceless

So, if it is the tranny, are you planning on getting it fixed or replaced. Because it might be cheaper to "trade in", so to speak, your current transmission, and get a rebuilt one. This might save you a lot of money. I don't know much about your car, but judging from the price for a transmisson, it is an automatic, right?

Anyway, it might be worth it to swap the transmission, if it's not the solenoid.

Umm dude... there are no new transmissions, they are all rebuilt, and of course i am getting it... yep you guessed it, rebuilt, and it only makes sense to get the tranny replaced if it's not a cellinoid

Oh, and Burzhui, there are new transmissions, but they'll cost you a bundle. What I am saying is, there is a difference between having your transmission rebuilt and trading it in for a rebuilt one. The latter is much cheaper.
