Does AIM and IM co-exist?

I presently have AOL AIM. My sister in Fla. has MSN and wants me to add their IM service so that I can chat with her. If I add IM, will I have conflicts?

Thanks. Which one becomes the default service/ Or are both available without executing one or the other? Right now, AIM comes up without me doing anything.

Currently, I have no friends that you MSN or Yahoo, but I have friends on AIM and ICQ. I can talk to both at the same time, and I don't have to have ICQ or AIM loaded for it to work.
