WinXP: Problem with Scandisk

Ok so i'm trying to run Scandisk on my c:\ drive in XP. I check the two boxes and hit ok and it says it has to do it when it restarts. That's all normal. But when it restarts it goes to the scandisk screen and says:

cannot open volume for direct access...
windows has finished scanning the disk.
