I am looking to buy a cd-rw for around $150. I want to use it to copy software games for friends. Also to make my own music CD's from MP3 downloads. Can anyone point me to a good one? I don't really know much about them.

I just bought the Mitsumi 4804TE 4x4x24. It works great with CloneCD to make backups of your software. Even copyprotected software. It was 145.00 +s/h from www.direct411.com (http://www.direct411.com)

Hope this helps

Your best bet is to just bite the bullet and spend a few more dollars for the Acer CDRW8432A. It's an 8x write, 4x rewrite, 32x burn with an incredible 8mb buffer (largest in the industry). It's $168 and shipping is $11 from compuplus. Heck, even 12x burners tend only to have 4mb buffers.

Amazon has the Plextor 8x4x32x for $185 and there's a $25 coupon for them too. soo...$160 final and it's worth it.

Personally I don't like Mitsumi's.
They are actually a generic brand that builds for everybody. Its got a spotty history at backups esp. PS

I don't even know if they still make these, but a couple years ago I bought my second cd-r drive (a panasonic SCSI 4x8x - no cdrw capability, unlike my first cd-r, a ricoh mp6200a w/2x2x6x i think), for a measly $250 (at that time, that was incredibly low..i think it only goes for half that nowdays). Just wanted to put in a good word for it, hasn't died on me yet, and i've burned well over 2000-2500 cd's with this bad boy. Of course, I made it external a few months ago because I didn't want to leave it on all the time (since my computer's almost always on), just to extend its life even further.

Yeah, I have the Panasonic you're talking about. The model number is the CW-7502B I believe. Unfortunately, I think mine fried one me last week while burning a VCD :-( I haven't taken the chance to really test it but I couldn't get it to burn the Dreamcast CDR-Modchip that came out over the weekend. Otherwise, this Panasonic sure was good. It's burned about 500-100 CDs while wedged between a super-hot Quantum Bigfoot and a CDrom and on the bottom another two harddisks.

The Plextor 32x8x4 mentioned above by Thorin78 -- you can get it on Mobshop for $183-$194 (something like that), depending on the buy cycle, and of course if you pay w/Visa you get a $25 mail-in rebate, and they're offering free shipping.

Or Compuplus has it for $185 + $17 3-day FedEx shipping comes out to $202 -- we just got it from them -- but probably not the best deal.

dunno if this still works..but try www.onvia.com (http://www.onvia.com) and use code "1000026." That gives u the plextor 8x4x32 for about 175. no tax and shipping.

The onvia code should work as I bought from them this Sunday.

Personally I would go with the Plextor 8x4x32 if you live in CA to save on tax and shipping from Onvia. I've bought about $3K worth of stuff from Onvia for myself and companies and haven't had a single problem yet.

I've had my Yamaha 4x2x6 SCSI since November of '97 ($694 when I got it) and it hasn't died yet even after 1,934 burns (I keep track of every one).

Ço£o§§ü§ - yeah you can read into it...

Thanks everyone for your help. I think I'm going to go with the Acer recommended by Apex since it has that huge buffer. Seems to be a good price too. Thanks again!

I tried that code for a Kenwood true 72x cdrom, but it said that it was only valid for purchases above $200

I recommend this drive as well, if you're planning to copy copy-protected games. This one does EVERYTHING!
