View Full Version : Dyno Runs

Just want to share an experience.

Took my stang to the shop the other day to get it dynoed and tuned after I found it it was only $60/hour for dyno time.

Currently, my car has showerhead 36lb injectors and they are dumping way, way too much fuel into the motor, even on top of the rpm range with 9lbs of boost. Our first run we made 360hp@5200rpm at the rear wheels. By cutting the fuel pressure and removing the custom computer chip we made 448hp at the rear wheels, 5900rpm. Not too shabby, but still way, way too rich. At least the fuel to air reading was on the scale that time. This is probably the source of my 20mpg highway gas mileage.

The guys that do nothing but work on 5.0 fords at the shop swear that by implementing 24 or 30lb injectors, an FMU (fuel management unit) that changes fuel pressure under boost, burning a different computer chip, and 2 hours of labor I can safely have 500-525hp at the rear wheels, and close to 575hp if we lean it out close to perfect. They want $535 to do everything, including a few dyno runs when they are done. The seat of the pants difference between 350hp and 450hp is insane. I think another 50-75hp would be noticable in gears above 2nd.

Those are incredible figures!! Is that a 351 engine? Is it turbocharged?
What kind of trans do you have? I heard that factory 5 speed manuals are only good for up to approximately 350 HP .

I'm gonna take a guess and say it's a 281 w/ a supercharger.

36lb injectors with 9lbs of boost is overkill, as you've discovered. With all that extra fuel that has gone into the engine you might end up with durability issues. Keep an eye on oil consumption.

I have a forged shortblock, heads, the works to keep 9psi (15psi?) under control.

Its a 302 (5.0) shortblock with a 9psi supercharger.

The trans is a beefed up factory trans (undercut, etc.)

Nothing more boost won't cure. ;) hehe.

The supercharger is capable of 20lbs, and it is a forged shortblock(pistons, rods, & crank forged). I am just curious as to what head gaskets it has in it, and if they will take 2-3 more lbs boost. I'll post some runs when we get it leaned out. Give me a week or two to get the parts in and installed.

What's an undercut transmission?

Undercut means the gears are ground somehow to make them "stick" together better, and let go of each other easier when it comes time to shift.

Brought the video camera for some sound. This is from our best dyno run, right up to the rev limiter at 6000 rpm.
