Alright folks. I fried my CPU. R.I.P. 1.2Ghz Athlon. :(

Time of death:
2:00am 1/12/02.

Cause if death:
Brief separation from heatsink (because the idiot user was installing an Icehole (http://www.virtual-hideout.net/reviews/pcmutants_icehole/index.shtml) and used too long of a screw which came out the bottom of the heatsink a little pushing on the cpu and causing a gap).

A replacement has been ordered. My Dual Celerons live on and allow me to have a working computer. ;)

I think the lesson to be learned is that AMD chips are not to be touched by incompetent geeks... :heh:

I feel for your loss, Speedfreak... :bawl:

So who fried it? You? Or you let someone else touch your 1.2? 2:00am seems like a bad time to be playing with a processor...

Well, I did. I am all mentally there @ 2am. It is not until 3am when I start to drop off. One simple little mistake. Bah.

Even experts end up killing more Athlons than Intel cpus.

It might make sense because Intel caters largely to OEM's, and most of the people who buy OEM computers don't know what a HSF IS. So its good sense to add safeguards to their cpu's in case some fool decides to explore his computer or somethin'. AMD seems more geared towards enthusiasts right now and theoretically, we know how not to fry our chips.

i agree. but if we're such enthusiasts, why are we breakin' out sh1t?

Because it is a highly technical operation! :P

I think the main reason AMD doesn't put in the same safety measures as Intel is price. They can cut a lot of price out of the chip that way, and it is one of the reasons why AMD chips are cheaper to manufacture.

It also has the advantage that they can sell you 2 CPUs instead of just the one.;)

Whelp... I'M BAAAAAAAACK!!! Back to the computer with the 19". I got the same cpu, but this time it is an AXIA. For those that don't know, this is referring to the batch numbers/letters on the chip. The ones that start with AXIA have a high percentage of overclocking very well. I shall test that out later. ;)
