President Bush fainted briefly in the White House residence Sunday after choking on a pretzel while watching a National Football League playoff game on television, White House physician Dr. Richard Tubb said.

The doctor, an Air Force colonel, said Bush quickly recovered and is doing well.

"I do not find any reason that this would happen again," said Tubb. "He fainted due to a temporary decrease in heart rate brought on by swallowing a pretzel."

Tubb said Bush suffered an abrasion on his left cheek the size of a half dollar and a bruise on his lower lip, apparently from falling onto the floor from a couch.

Bush was alone in the room watching TV while his wife, first lady Laura Bush, was in a nearby room on the telephone.

Tubb said Bush believes he was out only for a few seconds because when he awoke, his two dogs were sitting in the same position they were when he lost consciousness.

"He said it (the pretzel) didn't seem to go down right," Tubb said.

The fainting spell occurred at approximately 5:35 p.m. EST and Bush contacted a nurse on duty at the White House five minutes later. Tubb was paged eight minutes later and rushed to the White House to examine the president.

Tubb said Bush, under his own power, took an elevator from the second floor of the residence to the first floor doctor's office where he underwent a through examination that included use of a heart monitor.

His blood pressure and pulse were normal, Tubb said.

Bush has a lower-than-normal pulse rate, which doctors attribute to his rigorous workout regime. But Tubbs said that low heart rate made him more prone to fainting when the pretzel stimulated a nerve when it got caught in his throat.

He said Bush had complained Saturday and Sunday of "being a little off his game," feeling that he was coming down with a head cold.

White House spokesman Ari Fleisher said Bush intended to keep his regular schedule Monday, which includes an early morning trip to the Midwest.

Bush was watching the Baltimore-Miami game when the indicent occurred.

Now, could you imagine the history books on that if we would have lost him?

Hehe, CNN says that the whitehouse and bush did not use the term "choke" but they did give some bs about how eating a pretzel can cause you to faint. Funny, never happened to me.

wow, all those bomb shelters, body guards and other technology to keep our president safe and all he needed was a pretzel to bring him down.

Man, I don't like Bush personally, but his press releases are ten times more entertaining that Clintons... Choked on a pretzel... don't they have holes... or was he gagging on the sticks?

I guess every president has his embarrassing moment...

Bush Sr. hurled on the Japanese Prime Minister...

Ford fell down a few times...

Carter had the bunny attack...

Reagan had a few "forgetful moments"...

I'm trying to remember if Clinton had any embarrassing situations... :D

ok, since he's fine, i can go ahead and laugh my ass off. if something had actually happened to him, then it would have been terrible (i mean, even if you don't like him, i doubt most people would want him to die from eating a pretzel). but how funny is it for the president to faint while watching a football game BECAUSE HE CHOKED ON A PRETZEL. that's just too funny.

he didnt faint from "choking on a pretzel". He fainted because the pretzel had "gone down the wrong way" (tell me this hasnt happened to all of us)and his coughing caused his heart rate to slow down and cause a vasovagal reaction which caused him to black out...god, it's not like he was trying to stuff a bag of pretzels down his throat for crying out loud.

In related news, stock in Frito-Lay Corp plummeted after Attorney General Ashcroft announced a series of investigations into whether Rold Gold pretzels were merely the tool in a assassination attempt on President Bush.

Under the recent PATRIOT act anti-terrorism legislation, Pretzels will now be considered weapons. Airport security checks will be widened to include all salty snacks, and airline served snacks will be changed to include non-lethal soft-and-squishy snacks such as twinkies and tofu.

In related news, Pretzel purchases now will require a 10 day waiting period, and Pretzel Sticks will require a permit to be carried in public.

Should Frito-Lay attempt to resist the investigation into the alleged assassination attempt, President Bush announced that the US would force cooperation "by any means necessary". President Bush would not rule out the option of bombing corporate headquarters if required.

"America has a right to safe-to-eat snacks. We will not stand idly by while terrorist corporations infringe upon our freedom to snack. We will defend our right to munch. We will defend freedom!".

I think there was a little problem with some Whitehouse interns choking on pretzels during the Clinton administration. :heh:

I dunno... can't really buy the story about him choking on a pretzel. He probably fainted from shock because the Ravens were finally showing some offensive ability. :P
