hehe, our final is easy, it's oral. the teacher picks 10 questions such as:

¿De qué color son tus ojos?
¿Cual es tu appellido?
¿De donde eres?
¿Cuanto cuesta una mochila en Fred Meyer?
¿Donde compras tus discos compactos?
¿A qué hora es?
¿Qué té gustaria en el parque en el fin de la semana?

Nice and easy.

The romance languages are French, Spanish, Romanian, Portugese and Italian (I think...someone correct me if I'm wrong.).

laguages that change a word to make it "sound" right are romance laguages, unlike english, german, russian, and what ever else you can think of

Okay, first off, I'd like to say, xsiled, you are an idiot. English is one of the worst languages when it comes to maintaining the proper phonetic sounds of letters. Also, romance languages, with the exception of French follow the proper phonetic sounds of the roman alphabet almost perfectly.

Yes, romance languages are any language derived from Latin. A short list: Spanish, Portuguese, Romainian, French, and Italian. I think there are a few more too.

Oh, and Froggy, I was just looking through an old textbook for teaching Spanish. Good stuff. BTW, how is your class being taught? The standard repeat after me, or is it more of a TPR (total physical response) course. btw, topane doesn't get to respond to this line!!!

Wow, you learn something new every day. Haahaa. Its funny considering I've been speaking Spanish since forever. Anyway, in school we didn't call it Spanish, but Castillian.

Yes, well, Castillian is Spanish. It is considered one of the dialects. I forget exactly how many there are, but I know of several different Spanish dialects. The thing is, they are all mutually intelligible, and by that, I mean that a native Spanish speaker from Mexico could go to Spain and get around fairly easy. It might sound weird to them, but it is not much different than someone from Redundant Beach :P going to rural Mississipi.

A few words might be different, as well as pronunciation, but that's it.

I think in spain, they use the vosotros form, whereas in the spanish speaking countries of the west they don't. I think that is the main difference.

Actually, there are a couple of countries in the Americas that use the vosotros form. I can't remember which, but I think it is Uraguay or Paraguay and Argentina. All told, there are no more than 4 or 5 countries in the world that use it.

ok #1. im sorry for my vague comments but consider this:
ive had to take spanish for the last 2 years, have to listen to people speaking spanish everyday at school. my view at this point is tainted by people who grub off a country they arent really a part of. people who cannot speak english, which may not be the best of laguages , but is used all over the world, in most biz deals, and in all air transportation through out the world. sure you are welcome to a response, but how did one response effect you enough to rail on me...

"how did one response effect you enough to rail on me" Look, I generally won't point out when someone is making an a$$ out of themselves right away. It is a cumulative effect that gets me. If thread after thread, you are making stupid comments, sooner or later, I'm going to call you on it. There are some acceptions, yes, but that is only in the case of something really atrocious. Then I'll call you on it right away.

For instance, right now, you said some really offensive sh1t, IMO. I'm sure some people might agree with you, but in my experience, what you've just said is one of the most ignorant thing I've heard in the forum in a long time.

"ive had to take spanish for the last 2 years" So what? I've had to take physics. I don't go an piss on Euclid's grave. You're in school. Deal with it. If other languages are offered at your school, take them and stop complaining. If they aren't, well too bad, deal with it.

"have to listen to people speaking spanish everyday at school" And you are still ignorant of their culture and them as a people. Well, shame on you.

"my view at this point is tainted by people who grub off a country they arent really a part of" How many countries do you think the U.S. has "grubbed" off of? Why do you think Cuba and Haiti are in a constant state of poverty?

Besides, I know many immigrants. Both those who intend on staying and those who work here and take money back to their families. All of them are extremely hard working and are taking on jobs that most "Americans" wouldn't touch. The ones that are here legally are paying into social security; I think that gives them atleast a little bit of a bonus. Most of the ones that are hear illegally are working with job conditions bordering on that of slavery.

Yes, English is used all over the world, but the only real reason for that is because a lot of peoples that speak different languages needed a medium. French is every bit as significant on the world seen as English, but as you so aptly put it, it "sucks".

Anyway, when it all comes down to it, most people in other contries speak English, yes, but that is because (unlike here) most people in other countries are bi and tri lingual at the least. Look at you. You are complaining when you have to learn one language. Imagine if you had to learn two or three.

"people who cannot speak english, which may not be the best of laguages , but is used all over the world, in most biz deals, and in all air transportation through out the world"
I remember in another thread, you were lauding German, but in our current situation, Spanish is a much more significant language to learn than German. With the exception of 3 countries on the North and South American continents, EVERY other country speaks Spanish as their official language.

Also, just one more thought to end on. I don't know if you remember any of the posts in the Random Facts thread, but one of the random facts said that most farm laborers have an average vocabulary of 1,600 words (maybe 1,400). Well, this might be a guess, but I'm guessing that most of the people you were referring to were involved in the farm labor industry. Well, here's another random fact to qualify that. In order to be considered fluent in English, you have to know atleast 4,000 words, minimum.

Instead of complaining all day, why don't you do something positive for a change. Maybe teach a class with your vast stores of knowledge about the English language, so these leeches working 16+ hour a day jobs can be "enlightened".

A damned dictator down there by the name of Castro has driven that country into the ground.

xsiled: Going into a thread and just saying something sucks, well sucks. :heh: Please provide some backing for what you believe. People may not agree, but at least they'll consider what you have to say instead of dismissing it immediately.

But do you think that Cuba would be in it's current economic state if not for the U.S. embargo?

Also, I personally don't see what's wrong with a country being able to control its own industry, though the U.S. ensured that Cuba would never be able to.

The US is under no obligation to trade with a country being led by a repressive regime.

Besides they've had 40 years there to show how great communism works.

On the one hand people don't want the US to be imperialistic and to mind its own business. But when the US has nothing to do with one such as Castro, it gets the blame for what that murderous tyrant has done.

Bah. Damned if we do, damned if we don't. Its always America's fault no matter what.
