I have a friend that says song lyrics are better when they're straightforward. He obviously hasn't heard many of the very deep and witty and catchy lyrics that many american songs have. I'd like to give some examples to him, but I just can't remember any good lines off the top of my head. Can any of you guys share some you know?? Try to list song and artist if possible. Thanks.

BTW check this out!!

These could be from Hip Hop, Rock (yes Alanis is fine  ), Pop or any other genre.

I don't think witty means what you think it means.

from "so lonely" by the police:

just take a seat
they're always free (this would be good on its own, but it continues)
no surprise
no mystery
in this theater
that i call my soul
i always play the starring role

from "man in a suitcase" by the police

why must i be a man in a suitcase
is it me? the man with a stranger's face?

ok, so a lot of the police

from "dog new tricks" by garbage:

everyone i know has gone away
died or left or just forgot to stay

from "hammering in my head" by garbage: (not a good example, but a lot of their stuff is ironic)

I'm stressed but you're freestyle
I'm overworked but I'm under-sexed
I must be made of concrete
I signed my name across your chest

from "only the lonely" by the motels (not funny but witty)

you mentioned the time we were together
so long ago
well i don't remember all i know
is it makes me feel good now

from "life's been good" by joe walsh

my mazerati does 185
i lost my license, now i don't drive
i got a limo i ride in the back
i lock the doors in case i'm attacked

i go to parties
sometimes until 4
it's hard to leave when you
can't find the door

it's tough to handle
this fortune and fame
everybody's so different
i haven't changed

that's it for now...i been up all night :P

cpu, I think Manson is witty:

Since I saw her last night, a lil Dar Williams --

As cool as I am
"So now we're at a club, you watch the woman dancing, she is drunk,
She is smiling and she's falling in a slow descending funk,
And the whole bar is loud and proud and everybody's trying, yeah.
You play the artist, saying, "Is it how she moves, or how she looks?"
I say it's loneliness suspended to our own like grappling hooks,
And as long as she's got noise, shes fine.
But I could teach her how I learned to dance when the music's ended. "

Rush -- Natural Science
"The most endangered species - the honest man."

Primus -- Wynona's Big Brown Beaver
"Wynona loved her big brown beaver And she stroked him all the time.
She pricked her finger one day and it occurred to her she might have a porcupine."

Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel -- Calling Kyle
"His momma used to dance at the Broadway shows. Broadway, where the young men go to drop the coins in one two three.
He remembered walking in Not knowing applesauce from sin and uncles trotted one two three"

George E. Porge
"He's born in Beverly Hills but raised in Albuquerque and all the little girls, they thought him fine
But George E. Porge, he's kissed the girls and felt he'd rather kiss the boys
He speculates that now is not the time"

El Sobrante Fortnight
"Definition of an 'El Sobrante fortnight' is yet to be determined. But reliable sources say the time span is somewhere between two weeks and a decade."

Actually, most of BNL's (barenaked ladies) lyrics are pretty witty

Alcohol is a great example of that. Its got a catchy tune, and you sing along without really thinking about the lyrics. Then one day when you're singing along, you realize and its like, wow!

Alcohol, my permanent accessory
Alcohol, a party-time necessity
Alchool, alternative to feeling like yourself
O Alcohol, I still drink to your health

I love you more than I did the week before
I discovered alcohol

Forget the caffe latte, screw the raspberry iced tea
A Malibu and Coke for you, a G&T for me
Alcohol, Your songs resolve like
my life never will
When someone else is picking up the bill

I love you more than I did the week before
I discovered alcohol
O Alcohol, would you please forgive me?
For while I cannot love myself
I'll use something else

I thought that Alcohol was just for those with
nothing else to do
I thought that drinking just to get drunk
was a waste of precious booze
But now I know that there's a time
and there's a place where I can choose
To walk the fine line between
self-control and self-abuse

I love you more than I did the week before
I discovered alcohol
Would you please ignore that you
found me on the floor
Trying on your camisole?
O Alcohol, would you please forgive me?
For while I cannot love myself
I'll use something else.

Would you please forgive me
Would you please forgive me

Oh, and Its Only Me (The Wizard of Magicland) by BNL is pretty witty as well. Its all about masturbation.

I'm not anti-social
And it's nothing that's reproachful
It's just natural,
It's only me.

I can't think of anybody else I'd rather
Spend some one on one time with,
It's not that hard to see,
It's only me.

I'm the me in monogamy
I'm not asking a lot of me
I give me R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

i could go on and on, but i'll stop :)

"I Think" - by coleslaw, generated by the link in the first post in this thread.

I Think assignments are really a huge problem
I Think transistors are too much on my mind
I Think dumb people have got a lot to do with why the world sucks
But what can you do?

Like a green rain, beating down on me
Like a Rumi line, which won't let go of my brain
Like Sarah's ass, it is in my head
Blame it on school
Blame it on school
Blame it on school

I Think late nights are gonna drive us all crazy
And exams make me feel like a child
I Think boring lectures will eventually be the downfall of civilization
But what can you do? I said what can you do?

Like a green rain, beating down on me
Like a Rumi line, which won't let go of my brain
Like Sarah's ass, it is in my head
Blame it on school
Blame it on school
Blame it on school

Like a green rain, beating down on me
Like Sarah's smile, cruel and cold
Like Rumi's ass, it is in my head
Blame it on school
Blame it on school
Blame it on school

About the evils of Money:

we are the DOLLARS & CENTS
and the PoUNDS and Pence
the MARK and the YEN
We are going to crack your little souls

Business running politics:

I will stop, I will stop at nothing.
Say the right things when electioneering
I trust I can rely on your vote.

When I go forwards you go backwards
and somewhere we will meet.
When I go forwards you go backwards
and somewhere we will meet.
Ha ha ha

Riot shields, voodoo economics,
it's just business, cattle prods and the I.M.F.
I trust I can rely on your vote.

When I go forwards you go backwards
and somewhere we will meet.
When I go forwards you go backwards
and somewhere we will meet.

The Despair Factor -AFI(a fire inside) :D

Along the path where the stream is talking, I breathe the mist and continue walking.
The wood it whispers in a language of it's own.
As a sigh escaped my lips I feel the light caress of fingertips that steal away the breath and leave me on my own, waiting by the stairs. Waiting, I despair,(waiting by the stairs).
wahhoo oh oh( my life is a dark room, one big dark room.)

Do I hear the hollow sound, footsteps resounding on this frozen ground, or the familiar disappointment of the echoes of my own?

waiting by the stairs
Waiting, I despair,
waiting by the stairs
Somehow I ended up here in between, where there is always the comfort of knowing I'll never be seen

when I fall.
I wait for just one touch.and I fall.
Weightless, Endless, Faithless, I'll adore you.
A single touch before I fade.
Painless let me pass through.

any song by morrissey

they are are hilarious!
one of my all time favs is hairdresser on fire

Here is London
here is London
is it home of the free,
or what?
can you squeeze me
into an empty page of your diary
and psychologically save me
I've got faith in you
I sense the power
in the fingers
within an hour the power
can totally destroy me
or it could same my life
here is London
'home of the brash, outrageous
and free'
you are repressed
but you're remarkably dressed
is it Real?
but you're far to busy
busy scissors
busy clippers
hair dresser on fire
all around Sloane Square
and you're far too busy
to see me
"busy,busy"
hairdresser on fire
was a client over-cautious
he made you nervous
and when he said
"I'm gonna sue you"
I really felt for you
so can you squeeze me
into an empty page of your diary
and supernaturally change me
CHANGE ME, CHANGE ME

The Fundamental Things
Letīs run naked through these city streets
Weīre all captives of captivity
Letīs wear madness like a crucifix
Letīs tattoo Bible quotes across both our hips

Letīs get back to the fundamental things
Letīs get back to the elements of style
Letīs get back to simple skin on skins
Letīs get back to the fundamental things

Letīs dance barefoot over broken glass
Slither like a snake does through the wet, cold grass
Howl and tremble in a sleepless grind
Letīs do the braindrain, leave it all behind

You can sit in your room and worry
You can contemplate the end
Or let your house burn down behind you
Run bare-ass through the streets again

You can hide out on your rooftop
Wishing you had never been
Or go down to Halīs bar and grill
Find your innocence again
