dunno if repost..too lazy to check, and we're holding off on it today...so..:
http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/01/18/firefighters.statue.ap/index.html

The fire department is exploring other options for a memorial to the September 11 attacks after being criticized for a proposed statue that some said represented political correctness run amok.

The department's first choice was a statue based on a photograph of three firefighters raising a U.S. flag whose ethnicities were altered.

The three men in the photograph -- taken by Tom Franklin of The Record of Hackensack, New Jersey -- are white. The statue depicts firefighters who are black, white and Hispanic.

Whether the revised work would exactly replicate the photo or whether a different image would be used was not mentioned in a statement issued Thursday by Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.

The property-management company that owns the fire department headquarters building in Brooklyn had already commissioned the work inspired by the photograph. The bronze, 19-foot statue cost $180,000 and was to be erected this spring.

I say keep em all white...make it real...not our utopia.

maybe if people posted the subject of the thread in the "subject" field instead of their own personal opinions (which they should do in the body of the post.) less people would repost.

this is the first i've seen of this, and even tho i saw that other thread, i never read it because i don't come here to read other people's IMO moronic posts.

so thanks attgig for the new post.

Got it! Thanks styleee!

that isn't exactly what i mean.

for all the times that you HRB, i think maybe once did i notice it was reposted.

some people only read things that are interesting to them, and the title is what hooks them. so if one person isn't interested in a certain thread because of the title, it is probable that there are others that didn't read it as well. and if they find something interesting and want to share, then maybe they can bring in a different audience with a more specific title.

i find different views to be interesting for the most part. i don't always agree with them...or less...but it keeps a balance or gives me something to think about. a lot of times it just seems so biased that you gotta wade through a lot of crap to get to the point, but the point is in there if you look.

personally i also like the hrbs. there has to be a sense of balance, and peeps giving peeps sh*t is just one of the many ways this is done. it's pretty light-hearted, after all. imagine how often each thing would be posted if the batphone were disconnected completely.

as i said before, i would rather not read something that i think might make me think that others are complete morons. i like to think that G|A? resembles a utopian community, and that everyone agrees with me or is able to show me why i should take their view seriously.

that being said, a thread labeled "Another sad example of political correctness" would make me think that the thread starter would just piss me off instead of showing me thier view. and it is one that i would rather not contribute to.

and in my opinion, hell yeah they should depict the three firemen as different races. when was the last time you were in nyc?? hmm?? well, i can tell you that yesterday when i was riding the subway i noticed that in one car there had to be at least 10 different ethnicities represented, if not more (and that was before i read about all this.) and this in the middle of the afternoon when the car was half empty. nyc is full of diversity, and the idea for the monument was taken from a photo, it wasn't supposed to be a copy of it.

well, it just seems to be the new thing to bash "pc", although it serves a purpose. there may be extreme cases, but there are always extreme cases. just because some peeps are extreme doesnt mean we need to snuff out the whole idea.

as far as the statue goes, i'd still rather honor the dead than those three guys. i wouldn't protest if they made the statue with their likeness...it's not for me to say...but at the same time if they want to honor the victims then i'm all for it.

i think it's the fact that if they "erased" the faces of people that raised the flag that would be sorta playing with history by making the viewer of that piece of art ask the question "who's that one dude...?" Rather they should use the photo as an example or something like that... besides, if they only represent 3 races, then who would be left out? Personally I think the photo taken looks too much like the iwa jima photo. I like the fact that our nation has unified because of some of the similarities between WW2 and 9/11, i think it's also important to remember them as completly seperate and distinct... whatever anyway, theres my disjunct ramblings...

styleee,

I kind of hear where you are coming from, but this is my take. You say that you don't want to read someone's opinion, but you do want to read articles, news, current events, or whatever it happens to be. Try and think of it this way. If someone is stating their opinion, more than likely, something served as the catalyst for that opinion.

Why not just read the portion of the thread that you are interested in, and when it comes to opinions, move on?

good point. all "news" is told from one slant or another. it's hard to get completely objective, unbiased stuff.

this is the first i've seen of this, and even tho i saw that other thread, i never read it because i don't come here to read other people's IMO moronic posts. Please point out the moronic posts. Oh yeah, people with viewpoints other than your own are the complete morons. And then you say you want to take their views seriously but only after satisfying you?

and what i'm saying is to let me be the judge... have your opinion, that is cool with me, but i'm not going to read something that i know i'm not going to agree with. That gets to the real issue. You don't want to read anything that might cause you to reexamine what you believe and which is not cool with you. Sad.
