Report: Arafat considering resignation
Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat is weighing resignation, according to a Palestinian source.
Arafat is reportedly fed up with what he considers the abandonment of the Palestinians in the face of Israeli escalation, the source said, including the continuing closure on PA territories, according to a report appearing in the Yediot Aharonot Hebrew daily this morning.
Israeli sources say PA officials, including Fuad Shubaki, heads of the PA's armed forces finance department, are in the process of liquidating real estate and oil assets in Europe prior to a possible exit from the region, Army Radio reports.
MK Ahmed Tibi dismissed the report, saying it was part of an IDF disinformation campaign against the PA.
In an analysis of the current situation, Arieh O'Sullivan writes, "If the aim of the destruction of the Palestine Broadcasting Corporation building in Ramallah was to stop its radio and transmissions, then it didn't work. But it certainly did deliver a message.
However, it's the same old message: Hit symbols of Palestinian sovereignty as a pressure tactic to force Yasser Arafat to crack down on terrorism, order a cease-fire, and end the conflict."
