Friday night after work I decided to go for a little run. There is a route that I usually take behind the university, that goes down into a canyon. The canyon is kinda eerie because there is no light down there, and it was about 7 pm so it was super dark. So I'm running down the hill into the canyon, and I hear something in the distance. I could barely make out a large shadow a little ways away, and it's coming right at me. I then realize that it is a big ass dog. When it gets right in front of me, I turn sideways to protect my prized possesions, and the dog bites me hard on the upper thigh.
I spun the bastard around so that he flung off me, and I continue running down the hill. While I running I hear some lady yelling at the dog to stop. She jumps on the dog as I run by.
So she has the dog contained and begins to tell me that she had her dog off his leash because she didn't think anyone was down in the canyon. I get her name and where she works. When I get back to the top of the hill again, I notice that blood is running down my leg. It just so happened that I was right behind the hospital when it happened, so I was able to walk into the emergency room right there. They gave me a tetnis shot and xrayed to look for teeth.

Here are the pics:

I have insurance but I am not sure if they are going to cover the emergency room visit, since it was not a qualified hospital. I plan on giving the lady whatever bill I get.
Moral to the story, keep your dogs on your leash.

The bite doesn't look that bad. Stop being a wuss. :D But seriously, that'd hella freak me out if a dog bit me in the dark (or anytime for that matter).

Ouch... I hope you get better soon esdee. Isn't it a law that if a dog bites someone it should be put to sleep? Or maybe that's just in california maybe...

I've never been bitten by a dog before, I wonder how it'd feel like. This reminds me, during my mission trip to honduras I was hanging out with this one girl looking for shooting stars. Afterwards, she walked me back to the house I was staying in (feel free to laugh, we're weird) so then I bid her goodbye. Then the next day she told me how on the way back to her house, she was chased around the village by this dog, she lost one of her shoes and pretty much woke up the whole village...

I think she has to pay for the med expenses. There are a ton of laws on the subject of unleashed dogs. If you're really willing to get into a whole battle about it, you can complain to the local authorities, and they will require that the lady provide papers proving the dog is up to date on it's shots. If she can't provide that info, the dog will be euthanized and tested for rabies. (Which entails examining the suspected animal's brain.)

that b**** should never be allowed to own another animal. what if you had been a parent taking a walk with a toddler? dead toddler with a ripped open neck.

so what if she dint think anyone was there? it's not like she has a friggin chihuahua. nice to take chances with other ppl's safety, isn't it? even if you think your dog is friendly (and i doubt this turd has ever been mistaken for friendly) ... urrrrggghhh...

rant rant rant rant rant fume...

(this rant courtesy of an ex-paperboy who used to have to carry a baseball bat through her own damned neighborhood at 5 am because of lazy selfish buttheads who value their own convenience over the safety of others.)

glad you're okay, and don't feel bad about sticking her with your medical bills!

Ouch! Sorry to hear that EsDee. Unresponsible dog owners make me so mad  Dogs should never be allowed off-leash unless the owner has complete recall control. Also, all dogs should be taught beginning when they are puppies to NEVER to put their teeth on human flesh.

Make sure you report this to your animal control folks, to see if the dog has a history of biting. Even if it doesn't, you should log it in case there are future bites.

It makes me mad that this dog may be put to sleep since it's owner failed to train him properly. Yeah make sure you stick her with the bill. Did the dogs have current tags? In AZ you have to show proof of current rabies vaccination to get your tags - I suspect it is the same in CA.

I was bitten once when I was a little kid. I was riding my bike and a Doberman got loose from the yard and bit me when I was riding. I don't really remember much, but I remember an Animal Control officer came out with my parents and we had to go identify the dog. Don't remember if it was put to sleep or not...

Yeah, get better soon.

By the way, biting a dog isn't as disgusting as you'd imagine. Did it once when I was a kid and a dog was biting me. Couldn't put the dog to sleep though... it was ours.

Whatever that woman was thinking she was completely out of her mind. California has a pretty strong leash law and has several statutes regarding dangerous dogs (thanks to all the morons breeding dangerous pitbulls or canary island fighting dogs). This woman was definitely breaking the law having an unleashed dog with agressive behavior.

If it were me I would file a police report - she would probably get cited and fined. Those wounds can be dangerous since it punctured and damaged the surrounding tissue when he clamped down on your upper thigh. This happened to my brother once - he almost lost his right eye when a dog leaped on top of him and bit him in the face when he was 9 - he lost part of his eyebrow because of it.

If I were you I would be talking to a lawyer since her insurance will try to roll you over on this one.

It's actually looking nastier now that its bruising up around the wounds, and they wounds are starting to get pretty grody as well.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes. I wish you all the best as well.

Get new pictures for the civil suit!

No, seriously. You want the nastiest pictures possible if she tries to tell her insurance company/the police that it was "just a little nip". And that dog should be put to sleep what if it gets out again and finds a young child? If that dog does eventialy kill or maim a kid it's on you too if you don't try to get it put down.
If it was my dog it would get put down that night or the following morning at the latest.

Oh sweetie, I'm sorry! That had to have hurt!

When I was about 8, we were delivering Girl Scout cookies to a neighbor. We lived out in the country, so the house was across the road and about 1/5th mile away. Anyway, it was dusk, not totally dark but definitely not light. I knew the dog and had petted him many times before. I bent down to put him like I had before & he bit me right across the bridge of my nose. I didn't even need stitches but damn, it hurt! lol

Yeah, personally, if I were you, I would have killed the dog right then and there. Once it clamps, just grab it around the throat and squeeze until it is a dead, lifeless carcass. It saves time that way, but either way, I'm pretty sure that that dog's goose is cooked. I think there is a law about biting dogs in California, and if I'm correct, the owner doesn't have a choice about putting the dog down.

Anyway, get better. I hope the doctors gave you some antibiotics. If they didn't, get some; if they did, take them exactly as prescribed.

Good luck.
