I'm just wondering what you all think. I do golf and I enjoy it immensely. But I was wondering what everyone else thinks.
For the record... My best score is an 84. I love SD... Can play Torrey Pines every day if I wanted to. What a great place!

ive had this argument with alot of people for a couple years, i always agrue that anything with a ball is a game, and anything that is in the oylipics is a sport. by those, things can be both. and also football and lacrosse are not sports.(on the other hand, i dont know what to conder cheerleading to be)
a long time ago we had this argument, lemme find the post:

When played as a team... like in college, I consider it a sport.

exactly. like i always told peeps i played first string on the debate team ;)
Games that are turn-based, like golf and billiards, are not sports - they are games. To be a sport your opponent has to be able to take immediate and instant action against you - as in basketball, football, baseball, etc.

Sport as defined by Dictionary.com:
Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
So Golf is a sport. If you accept swinging a club as physical exertion, which I suppose it might be.

Hee Hee Good one OC.
I don't consider golf a sport, although it is probably one of the most challenging games there is. I've only broke 100 once (I need to go to the range more).
That said, I think that Tiger Woods is one of the best athletes out there. I hear that that skinny dude can bench like 250-300 lbs.

The dreaded "What is a Sport" discussion. It always ends up with people disagreeing with the definition of the word sport.
Here is a clue people if it's a game and it requires any sort of physical exertion, it's probably a sport.
Golf, croquet, football and even boxing are all sports. Like it or not. It may not be a sport you enjoy, but you need to grow up and accept the fact that just because you don't enjoy something doesn't mean that it has no value. You are not the center of the universe and the English language does not exist solely for your pleasure and interpretation.
Here's the kicker folks, the rules don't even have to be formal, just so long as they are implied. Kick the can, battles of wits (insults and so forth [making "sport" of someone]), even competitive cheerleading are all sports. You can disagree if you like, in fact please do. I like to laugh at other people's ignorance...

i'm with Grimm. arguments over whether a particular activity is a sport or not are really arguments over the definition of the term "sport".
i think a more valuable discussion concerns what sports are important enough to merit inclusion in the Olympics.

And which year was this?
I can't speak for golf, but over the last few years, an average of 5 people have died every year playing high school football alone. You might still be right though, xsiled.
Anyway, I can't really define what I call a sport, but for the most part, I consider anything that one trains vigorously for to be a sport. But, aside from that, I don't think I could ever consider golf, auto racing, or bowling to be a sport. Sorry guys.
