http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2002/01/25/usat-mit.htm

i tried to put the whole article in here, but it's a little too long. read it though, it's very interesting.

It's really sad, but it's hard to say that this is the unversity's fault since she was 19 years old. But they do say at the end of the article "Therapists are legally bound to protect a patient's confidentiality once they turn 18, unless they are an imminent threat to themselves or others. " I guess we'll see...

Ug. It sucks that she offed herself, but given her apparent mental state she may have done the same thing at home. Same old story with the lawsuit though :disa:

it just seems to me that you have peeps that say stuff as a cry for help, and those that are serious that just do it. having being one that followed it through, she may have done it no matter what. she did it in an extremely painful way that kept her around for a while. she was serious with her intentions, so i dunno what could have really stopped her.

well, the hosptialization and treatment that the docs say they wanted would have helped, but htey lagged in getting her in there. sucks.

yeah. my sis goes to MIT and told us about this awhile ago. parental pressure is getting too crazy. with asian parents at least (from experience and friends' experiences), they can go way too far. my parents are finally letting go of their dream of me being a doctor since i want to be a professor. *shaking head*

Well, I've worked in couseling at my college, and there is really not a lot that one can do. They way you are expected to judge the severity of the case is by the way the person describes their preferred method of suicide. If they can go into serious detail, then they are probably an immediate danger to themselves.

I still don't see how the college can be held resposible though. A particular psychologist, yes, but even then, that is subjective. :disa:
