this was kind of touched on in a couple other threads, but i want everyone to pitch in:
What, in your opinion, are the great movies that everyone should see?
I ask because I've never watched that many movies, but have started to see quiet a few lately. I want to know what all of you think are the movies that I should make sure that I see.
List away!

That's because it has gotten so much attention already in the other thread.
Also, you should have begun your reply with "Inconceivable!" :D

Hmmm... Well, I'll only name a few movies, but I'll try and name some directors that are worth noting. Almost anything they've directed is worth watching.
Movies:
Kenshin OAV
The Professional
Princess Mononoke
Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios
Abre los Ojos
Burnt by the Sun
Glory
Tora!Tora!Tora!
Fight Club
Shawshank Redemption
Directors:
Steven Spielberg
George Lucas
Akira Kurosawa
Tim Burton
Martin Scorsese
Francis Ford Coppola
That should amount to a decent list. ;-)

Seems like everybody's recommending "recent Hollywood hits." If you really interested in experiencing cinema at its best, it is essential to look past the "cool" movies and to include at least some timeless classics. You know, movies have been around for about one hundred years. Wouldn't you think it's silly to look only among films from the past decade? Of course many Hollywood hits are entertaining, but you'll achieve a much richer and lasting experience by boldly reaching beyond the New Releases section of your local Blockbuster. The scope of cinema is too vast for me to recommend a few off the top of my head. I'll come up with a list and tell you when I'm feeling less lazy.

thanks for all the suggestions everyone! this list should keep me busy for a few months :)
I agree w/ Stan about watching the old movies as well as the new ones. i just watched Citizen Kane a week ago -- awesome movie. i would highly recommend it to all who haven't seen it. the copy i had was (i think) from Fox...a 50th anniversary special edition that had a documentary at the end where various directors talked about how much director Orsen Wells and the movie Citizen Kane have influenced cinema today.
if anyone else has more ideas, please keep them coming.
btw, sorry if this is the wrong forum. i'll go ahead and punish myself :bonk:

:hmm: Like Birth of a Nation? Oh, that was a good one.
Seriously, though, there are some good, older movies, but there aren't a whole lot worth mentioning. Most anything by Alfred Hitchcock is pretty good. Some of the older science fiction movies are good as well: Forbidden Planet, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Time Machine, and War of the Worlds to name a few.
There is also a long list of "classics": Casablanca, Snows of Kilimanjaro, and Gone With the Wind.
I think the writing and stories used to be better in older movies, but they had their share of problems as well. Personally, I'd rather not watch Amos and Andy or a bunch of white guys with red face-paint running around in leather pants and chanting.
