ok, so i ordered some stuff from macy's a week or two ago. it said it was in stock and would ship by 1/29.
on 1/29, i got an email saying it was backorderd.
today, i got an email saying it was discontinued.

how irritating. have they never heard of real-time inventory? why did they sell it to me in the first place if it wasn't in stock and was going to be backordered?

i will admit that i have a very limited understanding of supply chain processes in retail, so i don't really know all the issues involved. but this stuff was supposedly off the "end of season clearance." therefore, one would think they had a limited quantity of items in stock which are no longer in production and would sell those items. so why did they allow my order to go through if no inventory existed to fill it and more was not being produced?

Probably. They most likely kept a few orders waiting for unopened returns and such. They probably estimate a certain percentage of returns and hold orders for them.
