Hey can anybody explain what's so great about Pro Logic II? And Apex mentioned on the deal page (for the Harmon Kardon Receiver) that it's great for music. What's that about?

better writing in the sequel. Kind of how Breaking 2, Electric Boogaloo was really a better film artisticly than the original Breakin.

Same cast, director, and cinematographer? Or did the sequel have a completely different infrastructure, like Alien and Aliens?

I'm no home theater expert by any means, but I've got the HK 120 and I think Pro Logic II kicks ass. Not only is it great for music, but anything in a theater (from opera to stand-up acts) and I really love it for sports (especially hockey). It does a remarkable job splitting out crowd and ice noise from the play-by-play.

It even puts a different spin on sitcoms with a live audience. Somehow even makes that better too.

Logic7 is supposed to absolutely rock. Alas, to use it with 5.1 material requires that you get a Lexicon.

Wow. That sounds pretty impressive. Finally Pro Logic has become intelligent enough to actually be logical... Now I want a taste.

If I didn't know you were an AV freak, I'd think you were just pulling random mumbo jumbo out of your a$$. I have NO idea what you're talking about man. I asked about Pro Logic 2 and you talk about Logic7?? At least you could explain briefly about 3,4,5 and 6 first... :heh:

Here's what my HK 120's manual says about its Dolby Pro Logic II & Dolby 7 capabilities (I've read this and listened to both and I still don't know what the difference is):

------
Dolby Pro Logic II:

DPL II is the latest version of Dolby Laboratory's benchmark surround technology that decodes full-range, discrete left, center, right, right surround, and left surround channels from either matrix surround encoded programs or conventional stereo sources. The DPL II Movie mode is optimized for movie soundtracks, while the DPL II Music mode should be used with musical selections. The DPL II Emulation mode creates compelling five-channel surround sound from conventional stereo recordings.

Logic 7:

Logic 7 is an advanced mode that extracts the maximum surround information from either surround-encoded programs or conventional stereo material. The Logic 7 C or Cinema mode should be used with any source that contains Dolby Surround or similar matrix encoding. Logic 7 C delivers increased center-channel intelligibility, and more accurate placement of sounds with fades and pans that are much smoother and more realistic than with other decoding techniques. The Logic 7 M or Music mode should be used with analog or PCM stereo sources. Logic 7 M enhances the listening experience by presenting a wider front soundstage and greater rear ambience. Both Logic 7 modes also direct low-frequency information to the subwoofer to deliver maximum bass impact.
------

Hopefully Apex can enlighten me on when to use each because I'm having major trouble discerning one from the other. Little help?

Logic 7 simply has the best algorithms for processing sound. It all has to do with how well it places sound. Unfortunately, the difference is pretty small unless you're using rather high end equipment.

The Lexicon MC-12B is currently the cream of the crop (retails for $9k though).
