I am thinking of putting together a new P4 1.7+ Ghz.
Any suggestions on which MB would be the best choice?

intel 850 no doubt...anything less than RDRAM PC800 cripples the P4...even the fastest DDR solution is not as fast.

Funny, this runs counter to everything I've ever heard about DDR versus RDRAM. I thought the only thing that cripples the P4 is the P4 itself. Its fsb is nowhere near fast enough to take advantage of RDRAM, and RDRAM is only, ONLY, faster on benchmarks. I the real world, RDRAM is about on par with DDR.

well...judging by 3dmark and q3 RDRAM is faster. I dunno why...just seems to be. DDR may be cheaper if you're looking to save a bit of cash. It'll probably be plenty fast for you. Whatever you do don't buy SDRAM PC133

What is the differance between ECC and non ECC RDRAM?

ECC is Error Correction in the chip...this basically prevents data loss in teh event the memory has some sort of error and fixes it. Non-ECC will simply freeze or halt the system or force a restart. It's not that big of a deal and most motherboards don't support ECC memory.
